Those Elusive Lottery Numbers

First off, I don't play the lottery all the time. (Maybe I should if I really want to win, huh?) But, no. Just every few weeks on a Saturday. The powerball. So I have to chose 5 numbers and the powerball. I started doing the same numbers each time. Recently I changed and started picking different ones each time. What do folks think? Different numbers or use the same ones? Your thoughts.

I've been playing the same number since 1989 and haven't won more than $70. Have a good day.

@porwest ......Oh, really? Ghee, with your political views I thought you'd be more lenient about such things.

I have always quick picked it. I look at this way, when it comes to our state lottery the odds of matching all six numbers is 1 in 20,358,520. That means I have to assume it would take at least that many drawings to correctly match them once. Considering there are 3 drawings per week or 156 drawings per year, I would have to potentially wait 833 years to hit it. lol That being said, if I were playing the same six numbers since 1989, I'd not change things up now because the very first drawing I'd choose to play differently would likely be the time that six numbers finally hit.

@anya12adwi ......A few times. I did a lot better back when it first started because there weren't so many people playing.

Can't win if you don't play... I just buy an occasional scratch ticket. The last one I bought won $14. I gave it to Juanita.

@celticeagle I guess your odds of winning decrease when the jackpot is high and everybody and their dog buy tickets.

How nice. I used to win back with the lottery first started in our state and not so many were playing it.

We have similar games of chance here in the UK. One of them is the EuroMillions, which is drawn twice a week and includes players from other European countries. To win the jackpot, you have to match 5 numbers + 2 star numbers. The odds on winning the jackpot are 1 in 139,838,160. It costs £2.50 for one line. I occasionally put it on if I’m feeling lucky. It’s a false feeling which I wish I could ignore, but I can’t. I have won, but never the jackpot, which often exceeds £100 million. The sensible thing to do is to invest the £2.50 in a savings account and which it accrue, but it’s a slow process and not much fun, and it will never reach the giddy heights of millions. If you can’t resist playing or just see it as a bit of fun, then (if it’s possible) let the lottery pick your numbers randomly, which you can do here. If you keep the same numbers, then you will find yourself checking them even when you don’t put it on. Then if it came up, you’d be devastated. Random is best. Good luck!

I have always let the computer pick for me. I figure it is more likely for the computer to randomly get it right than for me to pick one set of five or six numbers that may never have been the right ones. So far I am still trying to win. lol

@celticeagle I don't feel like I have much control over picking the exact six numbers out of a possible over 20 million combinations. Because the lottery is random, so should my numbers be. At least, how I see it. Even if I played every single day for 80 years, I'd only have 29,200 chances to win.

I don't think it makes a difference. I had them do auto pick on mine and now just have them replay the ticket. So I am doing the same numbers each time
