Fried Potatoes as a Staple

Call me nuts, but we love us some fried potatoes around here, and I make them with a few different flavor profiles. For this batch I fried the potatoes in butter and added some salt and pepper, plus some parsley and garlic powder. I added in some celery and onion and added an extra touch of Heath Riley Garlic Butter blend seasoning. These will be delicious with our dinner tonight. What's a special staple side you like to make with your dinners?

Those look so good! I fry potatoes with onion, bacon, celery and carrots, then top them with cheese when they're done. This is making me really hungry, but it's almost midnight.

@FourWalls My mom used to do that. It was always some kind of goulash: sausage goulash, tomoato goulash, vegetable goulash... It just dependent on what ingredients we had in the house at the time.

Is that a side dish though? I'd call that a main course.

@kareng No, you can't. And nice that they are still relatively cheap too.

I love a starch with my food -- potatoes, rice or noodles, potatoes being my favorite. Have a good day.

Yep. Same here. Usually our meals consist of a meat, a starch, and a veggie. We rarely deviate from that.

@LovesEverybody When you have been cooking for a long time, you just know what pairs well with things. It's something you develop over time based on other varieties of dishes you make. As for boiled potatoes, I do like them that way as well, with some seasonings. Most of the time when I boil potatoes, though, I am either making mashed potatoes or potato salad. But putting cabbage in with fried potatoes is good too, and I have certainly done that.

@porwest May I ask how you know what of those three things you put together to make a meal? I eat one thing for a meal as I have no idea how to put together a meal. There is the exception when I open a can of cranberry sauce because it is yummy. By the way, my mom sliced potatoes and boiled them in oil and we ate them like that. My sister thinks my mom did something else to cook them and will once in a while say "How did mommy make those fried potatoes?" but i don't remember. my Best Chef Big Sis wants to make them one day. My mom only made them with stuffed cabbages. She made those a lot

I love fried potatoes also. I, usually, add green onions, bell peppers, salt, pepper, nature seasoning, and a little olive oil and worsteshire sauce.

We make fries and tater tots quite a bit around here as well. When it comes to potatoes, we eat a lot of them throughout the year.

You and my daughter would get along wonderfully. She’s all about potatoes. As for me, I don’t have any special preference. I’ll eat just about anything.

I am about the same. Very little I'm picky about. But when it comes to potatoes, I can't think of a way I don't like to eat them. They are just all around good eats.

I also love fried potatoes

We had them last night with breakfast for dinner. I cooked them in a mixture of bacon grease and veggie oil, then seasoned them with Lowerys.

If I have bacon grease around, you bet I use it, and I always keep a jar of it when I cook bacon. I imagine the way you cook bacon you don't get much grease.

My sons both love fried potatoes...I don't make them very often, but when I do, there is not ever a bite left. As you often say, just good eats.

@porwest Oh, we love them, but I try hard not to fry a lot of foods. If I limit them somewhat, it's better for the waistline, ya know.

Well I used to like fried potatoes with onions but as you know I've been on this "meat diet" and usually don't have any side now - just meat. Although you'll laugh because at one restaurant where I order a child's steak as an entree I convince them to let my "side" be a plate of bacon! BACON!

I think it would have to be potatoes of any kind. Actually we have such a variet y of foods I cannot say any one is a staple. Right now we should say "soup" as I have been making a variety of soups the lat few days.
