I recently came across a YT short which stated at how number of churches are shutting down in the west as people are turning areligious! I googled and found that yes, they are turning into restaurants or breweries! Recently, I am seeing people here who are agnostic and atheists in India for which I am happy which I thought was impossible!! What do you think the reason is?

In some parts of the world churches are springing up everywhere - especially Pentecostal.

You can have a rich spiritual life without being religious. Couple that with pedophilia in the Catholic church, and the feeling of oppression so prevalent in religions in general, is it any wonder that people are turning away?

Let me start with a disclaimer...I am profoundly religious... Why churches are closing down? People shift to other towns and countries. Churches are big structures requiring plenty of funds for upkeep. With half the people moving out, it does become difficult to manage to repair the churches. Considering such factors, Churches are either surrendered to authorities. Another factor is fear being the minorities. Atrocities against minorities do exist in our country, don't they? To question god is not wrong. To be unhappy with god is not wrong either. I have been through those stages. But there have been moments, when I have sought his help, and I have received. There are blessings that i asked, and he did not give...and eventually, it turned out to be good for me..have been counting my blessings, and realizing, it is not possible without some superior power having been there for me. At times, I have questioned even that superior power. Well, I am no saint. Why on earth are you helping me? Are you god or the devil? LOL Whatever...there is an inner peace that comes to me when I think of god. I wish more people could feel god the way I do. You don't need temples and churches for those. Heart is enough. Brain is also enough to tell you ...well he helped...and well....he will in future too.

@anya12adwi As I said, people migrate. In the past, they migrated for jobs, or because of wars or diseases. Or water, or famine....earthquakes...landslides... So when we build those expensive temples and churches, we make them susceptible to become ruins some day. Another disadvantage of having too many temples is...the donation from the devotee comes down with each temple...after all, devotee will go to a temple nearby or more ornate...reducing importance of other ancient temples. Example of this is SriKalahasti temple on the way to Tirupati. While devotees still go there, it has been reduced to an obscure temple....it was famous once upon time. If only these over zealous temple builders would realize such facts. Sigh...

@vandana7 I wish they built more libraries, playgrounds, playschools and parks rather than these religious institutions! I am a firm believer of the fact we need no more new religious institutions! In these two years, I have seen two more new temples! In my place, I have access to 7 temples!! Where we stayed earlier, just because they feared the government will expand the road, which means many shops will have to move out, so they built a temple! I still see that temple whenever I pass that area!!

I wish every people had the same mentality! Personally, I had a journey from non believer to believer and again back to non believer! For me the churches declining in the west was amusing as here temples are rising!

We have a lot of religions here. All the churches are up and running. I guess it would depend on the place as well

here, church might get closed but the property is still from the church so no chance of another building. also, the church is closed only if it's reconstruction going on. catholic church is still strong here i think people are maybe sick and tired of church politics

@anya12adwi sometimes real politics and church intervine a lot also, the church itself is a big religious party where one members are supported and others aren't. it depends. it is happening with every religion, i feel.

If there are churches that are shutting down, surely God is building a place where He can gather His people and save more souls and protect them from deceptions and wrong beliefs. No one can shut what God built, but what was built on pretentions and lies will not last. God will never let evil people to drag and use His name in misleading His flocks, that's the reason.

may be people are becoming less religious

@Dreamerby The reasoning was justified till medieval era! No! People won't be lead to hopelessness, darkness or frustration due to absence of religion or God! Many religious people do commit crimes! But, instead when a person is in depression, darkness or frustration, he/she looks for God and religion!

@anya12adwi Noo can u imagine people being atheists? Many people are afraid of committing crimes in the name of God that God is watching and they will be punished. I know crimes being committed in the name of religion but that's a different issue- that's another dimension of terrorism. But without religion people will be pushed towards a pit of hopelessness, darkness and frustration.

I don't think people should be atheists. Because God gives Hope and Hope is always a good thing. Being religious within the limits of rationality is a good idea maybe. Because there is a Supreme Power who made the formation of the universe possible.

You donot need God to be hopeful! Let the Scientists think about the formation of universe as nor religion or God Himself can establish the theory!
