Trying different cuisines

One of the novelties of going on holiday is getting to eat meals out, something we virtually never do otherwise. And our trip to Paris was a great opportunity. Little One is rather a fussy eater, she has certain favourites and is wary of trying new things, but especially if she thinks she is being served vegetables! (unless they are artichokes). But she loves meat and chocolate (not together ). Our first evening in Paris we just wanted something easy and quick which would do the job, so we ended up at a Turkish kebab place which turned out to be great value. We all got various types of kebabs; mine and my partner’s came in big brioche rolls with salad and chips, while both the girls’ came with bulghur wheat, chips and salad. As a result I got three helpings of salad and couldn’t eat all the rest so I took the roll and some of the meat home and ate it for lunch next day. The next day we went to a French restaurant, where Little One was very happy to be able to enjoy pork ribs. The waiter (who was lovely and a lot of fun) arranged for her to have mashed potatoes instead of chips/fries (she said she had had enough of those) and no salad, so she was very pleased. And the rest of us had lovely meals too – highly recommended if anyone is passing that way – Café Metro. For a couple of evenings we prepared food at our apartment – we bought interesting things from the local market, which was open every morning just across the street. Another night we went to a Breton restaurant for crêpes which were a big hit as both girls love pancakes. They were not mad about the savoury buckwheat pancakes but loved the sweet ones with chocolate sauce. And I enjoyed a cup of dry cider : ) We liked it so much we went back again for lunch on our last day. And then the final restaurant we tried was a Vietnamese place near our accommodation, where Little One was surprisingly taken with the food, given that she normally avoids food that she only imagines might be spicy even when it isn’t. She had some sort of honey-marinaded grilled chicken which she loved, and she also liked the beef pho chosen by Big One when she tried that. It was such a success that my partner has borrowed a book of Vietnamese recipes from the library and is busy trying those out! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2024.

Little One reminds me of myself - i'm not exactly a picky eater, but i like to stick to familiar food and tastes and i'm also very cautious when it comes to spicy things hopefully your husband can make some of the recipes from that book

We have tried a few so far. He made kimchi (that was for us of course, not Little One!) but he also made the beef pho in the picture, salmon in some kind of sauce, and chicken baked with marmalade. They were all nice and Little One ate them all!

Is it really? I imagined you would be more of a traditionalist!

We loved eating out in France. But I could have easily lived on just bread and butter over there. The baguettes were to die for.

That is one of the joys of going abroad. The first and only time I've had Bouillabaisse was in Paris. It was a great time while working in Hong Kong to eat real Chinese food
