Oh, y’all are gonna be mad at me today. I’m not (deliberately) cheating in using this song on the pop side, as I will explain. I’ll just duck under this table while you throw things and give you the next song on the list of my 100 favorite pop/rock/R&B/punk/whatever made the “Hot 100” songs.
There Won’t Be Anymore - Charlie Rich
Yes, this was a #1 country song. However, this was recorded more as a rock/pop album when it was originally recorded (in 1964). Plus, more “traditional” leaning country stations tended to shy away from people like Charlie Rich and Olivia Newton-John.
When the “countrypolitan” sounds began dominating country music, we got two good results. One, RCA dug up some of Charlie Rich’s old RCA recordings that had bombed back in the 60s and re-released them on the heels of Rich’s pop-like successes like “Behind Closed Doors” on Epic Records. Two, the “outlaw” movement with Waylon and Willie and the boys started up, keeping an honest sound available in commercial country music. (That’s something we no longer have, sadly.)
This did, and still does, sound more pop than country to me, and that’s why it’s occupying a place on the pop list. Sorry.

The other songs” never get played anymore. Honestly I don’t know if “Behind Closed Doors” gets played anymore, either.

I love “Sittin’ and Thinkin’,” and I like to have back-to-back versions by Charlie and Ray Price play.

Canadian content law, you might have to listen to Neil Young first.

It's no "The Most Beautiful Girl" but 1964 was the best year ever in the whole history of years, so I give it 5 Yups ((@NJChicaa, 2024)).

I’m glad you worked so hard to get the Beatles some recognition that year.

This is a great song but I was a bit surprised to see it classified as pop. I accept your classification though.
