Back in the 1800s, people started noticing that hat makers were getting very sick. They would get the shakes, confusion, memory loss, and personality disorders. Some would develop psychological problems as well.
Eventually, they figured out that these hat makers were suffering from what was called erethism mercurialism, more commonly known as Mad Hatter disease. It is a brain disorder that comes from mercury poisoning. Mercury was used at the time to make the felt cloth used in making hats. It was injected by Inhaling the vapors.
Mercury was also used in dental fillings. It could leak into the mouth and get right into the bloodstream. It's a good idea to be sure your dentist is a mercury-free one. Some still use dental amalgam/silver filling because it is cheaper. Many patients have no adverse effects. There is about 50% elemental mercury by weight. Read more about this at the link below:

I had several amalgam fillings when I was a child. Then came the gold fillings. Now most of my fillings are white.

Good to have those I suspect. I read that some people are going in and having them removed. I don't think I'd bother unless they did make me sick. I don't go to a dentist so not a problem.
