An unexpected bird showed up at my house.

No, Thanksgiving isn't early. But a turkey showed up last night. We are going to go to my daughter and son in law's home for Thanksgiving dinner. Last year, we broke with tradition, and had an absolutely wonderful Prime Rib dinner. My son in law is a gourmet cook...and oh, it was simply wonderful! That's still the plan for Thursday. Last night, here comes a cousin who doesn't live far from me, carrying a big sack--with a turkey, thawed and still in it's wrapping, not cooked. Her kids surprised her with a holiday trip with them, so she is going to do that instead of cook turkey. She brought the turkey to me. I brined it, and now there is a turkey in the oven. When it's done, I will take it all off the bone and freeze it for future meals, soups, etc. I will boil the carcass for some good broth, too. This is a fairly large turkey, 18 pounds! I know we will enjoy it, as we always like chicken and turkey dishes. I did tell her I could cook it for her and she could get the cooked turkey when she returns. But she already has some in her freezer, and said for me to not worry about it, she just didn't want it to go to waste. Are you having turkey this year, or something different?

I haven't decided yet. I guess it'll be a lot of the same. I gave George hotdogs just now.

George does seem to like his hotdogs! But it's food, and he's eating, so I know that's a good thing.

@rakski Finally, it's cooked and cut up and in the freezer in freezer bags. The bones, scraps, etc. are all in the big crock pot and in the morning I will strain it all and freeze the broth for soups, noodles, etc. I get a lot of meals out of a turkey!

That’s such a blessing, Marie! How wonderful! Our family Thanksgiving on Saturday will include ham, but my own personal Thanksgiving when I enjoy the actual day alone will be baked chicken. I was going to go crab salad for Thanksgiving alone, but I had the crab salad tonight instead.

We are thankful for the turkey, and it will provide many meals for us. When she comes back, I will make her some homemade turkey soup that she likes, with ''her'' turkey! I like ham, but we don't have it often. Crab salad sounds wonderful, I love crab. And I love baked chicken, too. Yum!

Smoked salmon chowder over at my house. I doubt we'll ever eat any variety of bird again.

That's a very generous gift. It would be a terrible shame for it to go to waste.
