Never Say Never

As they say, “Never say never.” I once said I’d “never” have an Apple Watch. To me, it just seemed like a “status symbol,” a rich toy. Everything the phone does, it does, you can just wear it on your wrist. Then along came last Saturday, with the trip to the ER because of the panic attack. After I came home, my brother suggested that I get a home EKG device to measure my heart. He also suffers from anxiety, and he says that most of the time he calms down when he sees that his heart rate is normal. Great idea, so I started researching. And that led me to Best Buy, where I broke my “never.” The research showed me that Apple Watches have the capability to do a 30-second EKG that is FDA approved AND has about a 90% accuracy rate. It also monitors heart rate while exercising AND sleeping. Oh, and Best Buy had a Black Friday deal that was simply amazing. In short, the latest and greatest Apple Watch was all of $329. Four months of “Fitness Plus” come with it, as well as a lifetime of peace of mind. My heart rate is normal, and my sleep last night was great! I’m glad I ignored myself saying “never.” And I guess I’ve learned to “never say never.” The photos are of my heart rate at the end of a one-mile walk right after I bought the watch (left), and the Snoopy face that comes with the watch.

That is great! If one can afford it, it makes great sense to me. Sure some people use it as a status symbol, but a heck of a lot of people need what it all offers. My brother-in-law had to get one for work, but it’s actually helped his health. It motivated him to get healthier, and he lost 80 pounds.

It helps with that, too, telling me to get up and move around and not sit so much.

The humanity. But I hope it helps you with the anxiety thing. I'd call you to offer support, but the rotary device on my phone is jamming.

That’s okay, like Hank Williams said, the nosy lady picks up the line when she knows it’s my ring. Best you didn’t call.

@FourWalls LOL! Let's spite her tomorrow. I'll pretend to be Ko, from my Thai restaurant, asking about the food at Chui's.

I have all the cool stuff, but I just had to be dragged kicking and screaming into the watch era. I haven’t worn a wristwatch since I retired in 2019. Who needs the time?

I actually thought of mentioning the Apple Watch yesterday when you said you wanted something for EKGs. They detected A-fib in both my dad and second mom. They also can detect hard falls and automatically call 911. I have the SleepWatch app on mine and it is great for monitoring sleep.

I used it the first night I had it, and my sleep was great. I need to sit down and watch some videos on all of the features (given that our Apple Store is in a mall and there’ll be NO getting anywhere near it for the next month).

I have one because last year, my oldest son decided I needed one after a health scare...at first, I really balked and tried to get him to just return it, but he insisted, so...now I love it, and it does help. I do like the way it tracks everything every day, and tells you to get up and move!

My brother almost broke down and bought one (he loathes Apple products), but I assured him there are Android watches that’ll work with his phone.

@FourWalls I was rather intimidated by the Apple watch at first, I was afraid I would bang it on something, etc. and ruin it, but so far, it's been good to me and I guess I have been good to take care of it. I am glad you have one, it does give peace of mind, and as we know, that sort of peace is priceless.

It sends everything to my Health app on my phone, so all I have to do is show it to the doctor. I think that’s superb.

Vince has a smart watch and it's very, very handy. The doctor's EKG (ECG?) machine wasn't working one day and the doctor was happy to accept the watch's figures. There seems to be very little that it can't do.

Well, it CAN’T wash my dishes! (Maybe if I had a smart dishwasher…well, a machine…I’m my own dishwasher ) I kept putting it off and putting it off in thinking about buying one, and now I see why: the price was nearly $100 less!

The same with me that I would never watch reruns of some classic television shows when the local television stations decided to replace them with newer shows until I saw the classic shows on Pluto television in reruns.

Or “never” listen to some kind of music (country, jazz, etc.) until you hear it without the preconceived notions.

That’s great. I don’t have an Apple Watch but a Fitbit Versa 2 smartwatch. It’s cheaper than Apple Watch but doing the same. I can see how my heart beats, my walking distance and more. I don’t say Never as I avoid that word.

I’ve heard great things about the Fitbit. I went with the Apple Watch because everything else I have is Apple, and that makes it easy to pair it.

Well, that was interesting. Good part is now you have peace of mind and can check the health parameters better. I also had that attitude earlier. Now , I am like ok if I have to get these will go for these. There are many who are forced to use the high end smartphones due to features and profession they are in , rather than the status symbol. Plus some of the high end items have more durability and reliability. When it comes to health , we need to consider all these. It is great choice to get the Apple watch. It should help you in your journey. I too wish if it was more affordable where I like and well could plan for same. Well, all the best!

I think the “status symbol” these days is the long line to get the “newest phone” the day it’s released, when they were standing in the same line for the same thing last year. I got a new phone this year, but I went with the “bottom” model (the 14) that’s still available upon release of the 18. That phone will do me well until they stop updating it, then I’ll repeat the process. That’s usually the “best” way to buy a phone, because they want to clear out the older models to make room for the new ones.

Fantastic! Hubby got me my Apple Smart Watch for Christmas 2023 and I absolutely love checking my heart rate, EKG, steps, sleep, blood oxygen rate, etc.
