Well OK, I don’t expect you will… I was invited to a party by a friend. This is a woman I have been getting together with to play music; we haven’t known each other long and don’t have any other friends in common and I hadn’t met any of her family before except her elderly mother. So at the party I was making an effort to mingle and chat to various people, and one was a vivacious young woman who I had a really interesting conversation with. She was actually my new friend’s grown up step daughter, and you will never guess what her name was…. Cinderella! Yes really! I guess that makes my friend the evil step mother Of course when her parents chose her name they weren't anticipating that she would have a step-mother.

How WOW is that? I guess Cinderella is used to getting a few strange looks when she introduces herself. May I ask what you play? We've just paid for a banjo for our 'Irish' son for Christmas. It's his new love.

Currently I (attempt to) play the recorder. I got a tenor when Big One was little and playing the descant - the fingering is the same but an octave apart so I figured we could learn alongside each other but playing together would be a bit more interesting and less 'squeaky' than two descants. When we start thinking about it it's quite surprising what a collection of instruments we have in the house!

@Fleura One recorder can be a bit of a trial but they're much nicer once there is more than one. We've had times when we've had quite a number of instruments too but we've managed to scale down significantly.

When a chlid is born the parents have high hopes for that child. They want him or her to turn out better than they did and have all the advantages they may not have had. So somtimes the names they choose reflect something that may have had a good lasting impression on them when they were growing up - like a fairytale. Some parents give their children names like Princess or Prince or name them after famous athletes or singers or movie stars.

Choosing a name is quite a responsibility isn't it?

I would imagine it would be. I think she calls herself Ella, but then I can imagine the teasing when people found out the truth.

@LindaOHio Do you mean you hadn't heard of a tenor recorder? Recorders come in quite a variety of shapes and sizes, these are some of the ones that were played at a concert back in the summer.

We can only associate Cinderella with that fairy tale I guess. Wonder if she actually likes her name.

but still - why name your child like that. i just imagine how funny it would sound in Bosnian - Pepeljuga that name is often used when the woman feels overwhelmed with house tasks and she says "i'm working like Pepeljuga/Cinderella".

Yes I can't imagine actually naming my child that either - but then there are also plenty of other names I wouldn't consider too!
