MegaMillions for the Big Win

It's kind of depressing to some extent when you think about the cash option when it comes to the lottery, that the amount listed is not even close to what you take home if you win the jackpot if you aren't taking the annuity, which most people don't. Part of the reason for this is because the published prize is based on the value of the annuity invested over 29 years in a pari-mutuel payout. In other words, the real value of the prize pool is much less than the published pari-mutuel value. So, the current $514 million is actually only worth $241 million today, and $514 million 29 years from now. Between state and federal taxes, that $241 million on the cash option will only be worth $120.5 million. That's what you will actually take home if you win and choose the cash instead of the annuity. It's still a nice loot, no doubt. Now, if you invest the win, assuming a very conservative 6% return annually, you can take home $7.23 million a year. Not bad. Doing the math this means in 29 years you would take home $209.67 million, and added to your total cash prize, that's $330.17 million. Despite the lesser value one thing I can certainly say is, I wouldn't be complaining.

Neither would I. I'd be living rather comfortably on that.

@porwest Well, I'll say stroke recovery has been a bit more stressful.

I wanted to stop and get a ticket on the way home tonight and my dear hubby passed the big gas station that was our last chance of a place open on the way home. I will have to make a special trip into town tomorrow to get a ticket now! But I will go and get a couple of tickets!

@kareng Fingers crossed. And now it rolled yet again. I don't know if I will play it as often when it jumps to $5 a ticket in April, but we'll see. It's supposed to have bigger jackpots and more win opportunities, but we'll see. I'll have to test it out a bit.

I have not ever won anything, not even a muffin in those lists with prizes that children make us buy for school purposes after we have to give them the prizes to begin with.

I am one who has the sort of luck that by the time I win anything, it will be a comb, and I will be bald. lol

It's going to be interesting to see how the game changes when they go to $5 a ticket, which I think happens in April of next year.

I won $2!!! Seriously though, the cash payout on the Classic Ohio Lotto was up to almost $10 million which is a lot. Someone won; and now it's down to $500,000. Sigh. Have a good weekend.
