Today George is having one of his bad days. But, that was a good thing. The therapist got to see him at his worst more or less. And got to see when things got real bad. He didn't feel like walking, so he got pushed around in one of the VA's transport chairs. BUt, he did walk a little bit. And, he seemed to perk up a little bit and tried to direct our driver the way he wanted to go home. So, given time it kind of ebs and flows throughut the day.
Last night he needed my walwalker to get to bed, but today he didn't need it getting out of the couch. Nor did he need it getting outside and to the car. I did have to help him a little bit through.
He made the effort and that's the big thing. It's also colder then it has been, and it can take a bit to recover.

@kaylachan Right! They actually revised our forecast for tonight with a low of 35 instead of 32. And now it is up to 36. Ha!

I know what you mean. Those in the northern states are getting it pretty bad. Down here we're getting a taste and I hate it.

I'm glad the doctor got to see him at his worst but I hope that he starts improving again soon. Recovery doens't have any sort of set time limit.

No. It doesn't. He's at the recovery window in terms of regain some fuction, but at the same time, he has his good days and his bad ones. THe last week, he seemed to have a lot more energy. But the last couple of days he's just, exhausted.

@kaylachan Everybody has good days and bad days regardless of where they are in recovery. He's there and he's trying. That's a blessing.

It never feels great to have a bad day, but as you said, it was helpful in its way. Even on his bad days he is progressing and you are right there encouraging him too.

Yeah. When he's having a bad day, It can be hard to get him off the couch. But, the doctors need to see him in all forms.

Yeah, it's like taking a cat to the vet. They'll act fine. Or a car to the machinic.

Yeah, I know. We're a year out now. So his chance of regaining anything is minimual. But we knew that going in. I feel socialization will help him a lot. Even his sister noticed his speach had improved.

@porwest Well, I'm told it was complete or something like that. I am not sure, exactly. I just remember that they decided to do the wait and see option during those first days.

@kaylachan Recovery certainly depends on the severity of the stroke, and it seems he had a severe one. You're all pulling through well, though, and that's all that matters.

I really admire that you always manage to see the bright side of all of this. Kayla, you are a warrior for sure. And George just keeps on trying and doesn’t give up. I’m proud of you both!

If I let myself dwell on the negative, then I'm not going to do him any good. If he sees me feel that way, he'll loose hope, too. Being disabled and going through my own struggles, I always ask myself, what can I do, or how can I do this? I don't like using the word 'can't. Not even when it comes to something that I can't legally do, like driving.
When I go to the doctors, they tend to take a more pessmistic approach. Talking about how I should be asking for services like in-home doctor visits for George. And, thinking we need help around here.
Help with what? George gets dressed everyday. George gets up and uses the bathroom. I don't think he can feel when he has to go, and isn't interested on putting himself on a bathroom schedule, (well not a strict one), but he knows when he's wet. And we use disposable undies because if he can't feel when he has to go, I'm not having to work so hard to keep things dry and clean.
George can walk unassisted most of the time. In the nine months or so he's been home, he's used my walker all of two times. But, since it's just the two of us, no one sees that. No one sees him trim his beerd (though they can tell by looking at him if it's been done) He's had professionals do his nails, because his right hand doesn't work as well.
He doesn't want to take a shhower, because there's nothing I can do with his peg tube that wouldn't hurt on some level. But, he did try, once, his first month home.
His speach therapist thought that George had some delusional and disfuctional thinking because he said he'd go back to doing a lot more things once his tube was out. Until I said it's a peg tube. Then he understood where I was coming from. Then he realized what we meant.
If they are worried about his cognition, then they should see him in the dam real world. They should cart us around and listen to him back seat drive. If I could round up every damn driver we've had, and had them tell doctors how George insists we have to go the places we need to go the way we need to do it. Plus none of them will ever know him like I do. They don't know the George before the stroke. So they don't know what's actually due to the stroke.
I have to make them see.

It's going to be a bit of a rough day for him today, but I'm hoping with some extra sleep, he'll feel better. He really didn't get his usal morning nap today.

No, right-sided Paralisis. He can walk, he just forgets to do basic things that we do when wallking.
