Can you give up sugar?

Yesterday I ate a Snickers. Last night I woke up with severe pain. I had an IBS flare. I felt pain for more than 40 minutes. I was dizzy and I was very pale. I had a high heart rate. My cat wanted to check if I was fine. I took medication for the pain, but the pain didn't go away. All this happened because I ate sugar. I don't know how can I give up on sugar. It's one of my joys and my body and brain want and need sugar every day. But it seems I am my worst enemy because after eating sugar sometimes I have severe digestive issues. Can you give up on sugar completely?

You can, but it's not easy for some. You also said you had a snickers. That has more sugar in it than say recesses would. Avoid anything with carmel, because that's litterally burnt sugar that's been cooled.

I ate caramel with ice cream, but a very low portion. Nothing bad happened. And I ate Snickers before. I eat it once a month. And nothing happened. Sometimes I have problems and sometimes I don't have any problem eating the same foods. It's so difficult to give up sugar. I stopped eating it for a few days and the digestive problems continued.

@dya80dya yeah I know what you mean, I have days like that
I can eat what I want & my sugar doesn't rise, but some things I
can eat & it goes off the charts, I don't get it myself, when I 1st
came home from the hosp & was trying to figure out how it all
worked, I went on a mission of just what I could eat & not eat.
I wrote everything down to make a chart of what is good & what
is not good to eat, so when I get in the cabin I can have a chart
of what foods are good to what foods are bad for me.

Sugar became my enemy when I lost my husband in 2017 to undiagnosed sugar diabetes. So I will eat some sweets but I don't look for sugar. I only keep some brown sugar at home, I also enjoy iced tea but make it myself and sugarless,

@dya80dya no regular sweets but i don't have them as often, As far as sugar goes it increases the risk of diabetes and my husband really loved everything sweet

I can eat a little bit of sugar due to my pre-diabetes condition but I try to avoid eating sugar on my cereal.

@dya80dya That is what my doctors told me to eat in moderation.

Poor Diana. I know how this is..it is very hard to give up sugar.
And the little you can enjoy in life, you pay dearly for..me too, I understand.
You seem to have that IBS very badly. I have it, but mostly under contriol, but it hurts so badly when it happens.

Even if diabetes runs in the family, it is hard not to have some sugar occasionally. :(

you need sugar, but you need to be careful with how much you're taking. i don't like snickers because it's "too strong" for me. maybe try other chocolates. take care

I HAD TO give up sugar cause after going through ALL I went through
I ended up with T-2-D, so now I take 10 different meds & (2) insulin shots
EVERY DAY, & I have to watch what & how much I eat, So if you don't
want to end up like I & or others are from eating sugar, you better think
about how to change your diet cause it can harm you more than help you.

There are many sugarfree alternatives, so I guess you could. I don't know if artificial sweeteners are gentler than sugar when it comes to the gut though.
I might recommend watching some videos from Dr Robert Cywes, if English is a struggle you might try automatic subtitles.
He talks about how sugar is bad but mostly targets obesity and diabetes, however I've seen at least one video where he mentions IBS. And of course, he'd also provide tips how to get rid of "sugar addiction".
I take protein shakes and lately I've been adding flavored protein powder to greek yogurt, I haven't been craving for chocolate in ages and prefer nut butter over any sweet cream.

My diet is very restricted because of my IBS. I don't have many joys in life and sugar improved my mood a lot. I only ate something sweet every day, but not a lot of sugar. Sugar-free alternatives are worse for me. For example, my body can't tolerate honey. I read that sugar doesn't cause diabetes and this is a myth.

@dya80dya Honey has glucose, it might be healthier than table sugar but it's sugar nevertheless. I was thinking more of artificial sweeteners, some say they hurt the gut or cause cancer but you need so little it should not cause any problem.
After all, everything is poison in large quantities, even water.
