Sometimes I can be obvious. This is one of those times. I’ve mentioned this one a hundred times before, and how my dear mother of blessed memory even loved it. It’s no surprise that it shows up on the list of my 100 favorites. I’d even say this one might be top ten…but definitely top 20. Dance along.
Walk of Life - Dire Straits
There are a boatload of songs in this world where I liked the follow-up much better than the big hit. This is one of those instances. It’s not that I dislike “Money for Nothing,” which went to #1 (I don’t dislike anything on that album!), but this song is so much more fun. And, like I said, that infectious beat grabbed my mom, too. (My dear mother had NO rhythm to speak of. I once told her she was “so white.” She later saw the Steve Martin film The Jerk and understood what I meant when she saw him clapping on one and three…and she called me, in tears from laughing. )
I’ve linked the rarely-seen-in-this-country UK version of the video, which follows the storyline of the lyrics (a street musician playing for pennies in the subway) more than the sports bloopers in the US version. I realize this is from the 80s, and the video generation, but a video is so unnecessary for this classic tune.
Walk of Life
Written by Mark Knopfler
Recorded by Dire Straits
From Brothers in Arms, 1985
Peak chart position: #7
Today’s country song: “Whose Shoulder Will You Cry On”
And after all the violence and double-talk:

Yes, much better video than the sports one, I especially like the subtitles, "upbeat music" and "Woohoo" , just so we aren't confused.

His guitar playing is sooo melodic. I could listen to him play all day.

Indeed they are. There’s a meme on Facebook that I’ve seen a number of times that says, “Tell me your favorite song and you will tell me much about yourself.” I don’t know about that exactly (don’t know what loving this song says, for instance), but that’s what I feel like I’m doing with this list.

Wow, you out did yourself with this one, as the kids say it was fire. Reminded of my hippie days. Good job.

Mark Knopfler - fantastic guitarist and wrote some great tunes.
I have the album Brothers in Arms.
Have you seen the movie Local Hero? The theme tune was written by Mark Knopfler, and is also played before every home match at Newcastle United FC. Great movie and great team.

@FourWalls I’ve seen some of their collaborations. I wouldn’t put them in the category of great singers, but as guitarists, they are up there with the best.

@Orson_Kart — one of my all-time favorite lines about Chet Atkins is one he told on himself. In his 1976 autobiography he talked about how RCA was hesitant to sign him solely as a guitarist and asked if he could sing. “‘Sure,’ I lied.” And that’s very true. Most of his singing was augmented by others.

I sort of wish they’d release a CD with the album edit versions of the songs. The CD versions are longer. Either way, it’s a great album.
I haven’t seen the film but I’ve heard the song. Mark also did a great duet album with Chet Atkins…they even won a Grammy for “vocal duo” for a song from it!

ah finally something i'm familiar with, i like the song
and "so white" joke is a hit nowadays as well when people actually can share videos of others having no sense of rhythm

I got my sense of rhythm from my dad, that’s obvious, because mom had none.
Nice to finally hit an “international hit” song in the list!
