In this case, beauty is in the eye of the beholder

The photo shows the flower that has appeared on my friend’s cactus plant. Plants show as much variation as human beings. Some – and I’m talking about plants now, not humans – have wonderful flowers that maybe don’t last long. They may have beautiful colours and/or a fragrant scent. Other plants have beautiful foliage which may be variegated/spotted/striped/etc while the flowers may be insignificant. This flower isn’t particularly beautiful I guess. I thought it was one of those that smell like rotten meat but it doesn’t have much perfume at all. It isn't a large flower but look at the intricate patterning on the petals. While the colours may not seem attractive, it does have its own beauty.

Even if it’s not traditionally beautiful, I think it is cool looking. There’s something to be said about being just really different. Makes me think how cool God is (although I understand a lot of people don’t believe in Him).

I can never believe the beauty of tiny things. Things like the eyes of insects or a butterfly's wings. The colours and patterns when a photo is enlarged are just remarkable.

I find this very unique and attractive! I wish I had cactus that has flowers. My neighbour does and it's beautiful!

Cacti don't seem to flower very often but they are certainly very beautiful when they do.

At first I thought it was a brooch! Kew Gardens often announce when an unusual plant flowers and these viewings are so popular that there are queues and it is hard to get a ticket

I posted this but didn't come back to look at it. In a large format, it looks quite like a piece of crochet work. That's interesting about Kew gardens.

Cacti and succulents don't take a lot of care - or a lot of water.

Yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think this quote provides a good reason why. I actually think the plants uniqueness is beautiful

It has a beauty of its own. True , its not beautiful in traditional way like how a lotus or rose looks like , however it has its own elegance. There are times, when nature and life are mystical. While , this flower may not have a good scent or is not great looking or may not even last long ,it happens to blossom on a cactus with an elegance. Not sure , how many cactus plants have been great to have such elegant flowers. That is some mystical ways of nature , telling us that is how life is as well. For me, I have never seen any flower like this ever before. And for me , it looks beautiful. Well, enjoy the day!

It certainly doesn't have a conventional beauty but, as you say, that's not really important.

It is in the family of those plants that stink. I am glad it does not. Really interesting pattern.

I think it's beautiful in its own unique way. It's not something you typically see, so I think that's what makes it somewhat attractive. My Christmas cactus is about to go into full blown bloom mode with the next week. It has so many buds all over it, I suspect it will be quite beautiful once they all bloom.

at first i thought that was jewelry - it does look cool and the pattering on the petals is really interesting. for some reason it gives me "kaleidoscope" vibe

I can see why 'kaleidoscope' comes to mind. And it does look quite like a brooch.
