An appropriate title for a day when they’re predicting the evil S stuff and you’d rather be in a warm, sunny place. Right now it is sunny, and I’m sitting right under the heater at the restaurant, so things are good. I’m also going to give you another song from my list of 100 favorite songs from the Billboard country singles chart. Here’s today’s song.
Wishful Thinking - Wynn Stewart
Yes, it’s welcome back to Wynn Stewart, one of the stalwarts of the Bakersfield Sound. This is some hard driving country music here, a total contrast to the Nashville Sound songs of the same year (like “The Three Bells,” which is also on this list). Heck, you take the fiddle and steel out and this could be a punk song!
The joy of the shuffle is sorely missing in country music (along with a million other things, like a country sound…but I digress). I have this one on my workout playlist, because it gets me going. It might get you running but this is truly the music of my soul.
Wishful Thinking
Written by Wynn Stewart
Recorded by Wynn Stewart
Released as a single, 1959
Peak chart position: #5
Today’s rock song: “You’re Only Lonely”
Now I know why some people cry:

I’d be in better spirits if you could get some help for Mr. OHio from the VA.

I recognised the name of the song, but the one I was thinking of was by a British band called China Crisis. They had a few hits here in the UK in the 80’s. Wishful Thinking being one of them. Not Country, but still worth a listen.

I remember them! Didn’t Steely Dan’s Walter Becker produce one of their albums?

I understand, but I’m kind of old, so anything with a faster beat than the Beatles’ “Yesterday” is good for me.
