Prices Going Up At Dollar Tree

United States
December 12, 2024 5:59am CST
Yesterday, as I was scrolling the web I ran across an article that said Dollar Tree is raising its prices. I like that store, I could tell the difference in the price when I'd go than at Walmart. I hope they don't raise them too high. I wonder if we will ever get back to decent prices again. I feel for people who rents are going up and don't see a slow down in that. I did see on TV if people are having a hard time with rent they can dial 211 and maybe get help.

Didn't Dollar Tree raise their prices to $1.25 recently? now the prices are going up again? Geez they raise their prices lately as often as the post office does with the price of stamps.

Yeah, you're right, I was so surprised to read it. I use to go there instead of Walmart, now I'll have to see.

They did. But now they also added $3 and $5 items. Before you know it, it will be nothing more than a Family Dollar with a different name. Of course, Dollar Tree owns Family Dollar...either way, I shop less and less at Dollar Tree because it just doesn't offer the same value and is becoming a totally different store, and not one I like the direction of.

@popciclecold Few items at Dollar Tree are actually cheap anymore. There are only a handful of things I will still get there.

I have seen prices go up, and up, and up, but I have NEVER seen them come back down. So the Dollar-and-a-Quarter Tree is going to be the $2 Tree now? Since everything they sell in there is made in China it’s probably a preemptive move.

You could be right. Something is going on. You said a mouthful, not seeing prices come down. I don't think no one has.

@porwest — and it also goes back to the time-honored lesson that people never seem to learn: NEVER name a franchise after a price. It didn’t work for Motel 6, 8 Days Inn, Super 8, Dollar General, or Family Dollar.

I think what they are doing is slowly converting the stores to be just another Family Dollar with a different name, and we all know what's happening to Family Dollar. It's failing. And who owns Family Dollar? Dollar Tree, so what's coming is going to be a store we no longer recognize, and it won't be for the better.

It is happening everywhere and tariffs will make it worse

I think so too. Don't really want to see higher prices, but looks like it is unavoidable.

People are hanging on this tariff thing, but of course the OTHER candidate wanted to raise corporate taxes. You tell me what the difference is. Both are taxes. Both are collected from consumers. Both have exactly the same inflationary impacts. So, why were you okay with one and not the other. Probably because people don't actually understand how the economy and taxes work and who actually pays them. There IS one difference, though. Tariffs support American jobs. Corporate taxes send them overseas where taxes are cheaper. Not to say one is better than the other, but one hurts you more than the other.

@popciclecold Prices CAN actually come down, believe it or not, based on Trump's plan to do it. I know that will be met with, "But you support Trump, of course you'd say that." But the reality is that while inflation is here to stay, or in other words, the higher prices are. At the same time if you can REMOVE big factor costs from production and transport—say, energy—you can dramatically reduce costs and those savings will be passed on to consumers. Tariffs protect American labor and lowering energy costs reduces the cost to produce and move things around. That can lead to higher wages and better jobs, MORE jobs offered because let's say China wants to avoid the tariff. What can they do? Build a factory HERE and then they won't be tariffed. That combined with the 15% corporate tax rate Trump is proposing would be a BOON, not a problem. I think people are missing the point. You want a job at Walmart for $15 an hour or a factory job that pays $30 an hour? At the same time, why did we lose so many good jobs? Corporate taxes were too high so American companies closed their American shops and went to Mexico and China and other places where the labor was cheaper and taxes were lower. The tariffs cancel the benefit of cheap labor overseas.

If you own the businesses making the money, you can make money right along with them. They did invent something called the stock market, you know, and so with that, everyone and everyone has the ability to become a business owner and share the profits. If one isn't making money with the businesses, it's more because they choose not to rather than they can't do it. If you do not participate in the economy, you can't expect to be a beneficiary of it. It's that simple. Money is not kept from people. People keep themselves from it.

Things are tough all over. I do all my shopping at Walmart because I can do it online. Have a good day.

That would be sad news for many. I recently saw in the news that there was a TikToker who went viral for being able to prep a Thanksgiving dinner for only $20, thanks to the Dollar Tree. Apparently, many people benefited from her video (and also bought stuff from the Dollar Tree.)

I had a feeling when Dollar Tree raised prices from $1 to $1.25 and then started adding $3 items that eventually they will completely depart from their business model and become something more like a Family Dollar or Dollar General. Incidentally, Dollar Tree owns Family Dollar if you didn't know. Now things are anywhere from $1.25 to $5, and I think soon it won't even look or feel like a Dollar Tree anymore. As they makes these changes, I shop there less and less because it simply doesn't present the same value it once did.
