A broken coffee mug

I thought I had a photo of the mug I'm going to write about but can't find it. The photo shows the cocktails we received at the clubhouse Christmas party. We had a visitor the other day and she managed to break Vince’s favourite cup. It was given to him by a work colleague quite a few years ago. It had got a bit faded from the constant washing in the dish-washer but the photo shows it in its heyday. It was an accident but it didn’t help that she found it funny. It didn’t seem a nervous laugh which affects some people when things go wrong. We met this lady during our couch-surfing days but lost touch for some years. Now she is living nearby and has sort of attached herself to us. I’m sure this sounds a bit harsh but we don’t have a lot in common and she has some very irritating habits. However, I’m sure we’ll muddle through.

Oh wow, she sounds like a nightmare! I'm sorry Vince lost his favorite cup. They are special! I know I have my favorites, and my hubby does too! Maybe she will find somebody else to hang onto!

In her favour, she is trying to find more friends and I feel sure she'll need less support from us as she meets more people more of her own age group.

@JudyEv Yes, that sounds very logical.

Maybe you can convenienty be "in the middle of something" whenever she wants to visit.

At least she always rings or messages before visiting and we sometimes have 'something on' or 'are just on our way out'.

@JudyEv Yes, or you could say one of our son's is calling in 5 minutes, and it will surely be a lenghty conversation. Soon you will be a master at creating fictious excuses.. Sometimes ya just gotta do, what you have to do.

She is new to this city and does need company. I'm sure she'll find friends of her own age as time goes by.

I’m sorry that his mug got broken. One of ours was broken recently and it was a bit of a sentimental one. That’s terrible that she has attached herself. I hope you can find a way to detach her.

She is making efforts to meet more people so that's good. She only moved to this city a few months back and is still finding her feet. I'm sure it will all work out.

It will work out in time. Once we have the motor-home set up we'll be away travelling which will restrict her visits.

Atleast she phones you when she has plans to visit you . You can always give excuses. And if it happens often she will surely know she is not wanted.

We wouldn't shun her entirely. She's not too bad - just a bit difficult to put up with.

We will soon have our motor-home to go touring with so that will give us a good excuse for time away from her.

Why would it be funny to break a mug. I broke two of my cat mugs lately and now I need to look for two cat mugs again.

The mug was a bit faded but she still shouldn't have treated it as funny.

Back in Latvia my favorite mug was one that said Life's a bi---- and then you die, The handle broke off and I used it as a measuring cup and later forgot what happened to it,

I've heard that saying. I remember many cups losing handles but it's doesn't seem to happen so often nowadays.

I'm sorry about Vince's cup. I have a favorite mug that I had when I first started working over 50 years ago. I would be upset if someone broke it. Good luck with the neighbor. Have a good day.

i hope your husband is okay, i know that i would be mad and sad at the same time. and if she laughed, i'd probably just leave the room. some things are so simple and yet so precious to us. i don't know about the second part, i think that some people just want company. if she's lonely, i'd tolerate her irritating habits once in awhile

The mug incident was a bit strange. Perhaps it's her German upbringing or something. We'll still welcome her visits from time to time. She is a fly-in-fly-out worker so is only at home every second week.

I'd be mortified if I break someone's mug. We get quite attached to these things and a good mug is a treasure for life!

I'd be really upset too if I broke a mug. I broke the handle of one at a house-sit and replaced it with another. She said it didn't have any particular sentimental value so that made me feel a bit better.
