A sweet before Christmas gift

My husband Dale isn't perfect, but he's been a good husband for 58 years. Last year when I was going through treatments for breast cancer, he took me to all the doctors' appointments which were three or four times a week. That included chemo and radiation and sepsis with surgery for blocked kidney stones. He also did the cooking, cleaning, and everything I needed. I'm back to normal for the most part, just waiting for an injection in my neck and dealing with back pain again. The other day our son Robert came over for dinner (lunch to some of you!) so of course I cooked a nice meal. Mamas like to do that. I was exhausted afterwards and when Robert left, I took a nap. While I was sleeping, Dale unloaded the dish washer, put the clean dishes away, loaded the dishwasher with all the dirty dishes, and even washed a few by hand. That might not sound like a big deal, but my back was hurting so much and I was really dreading cleaning up the kitchen. That was such a thoughtful act of love. I think I'll keep him another 58 years.

Vince is very good to me too although he doesn't clean up the kitchen too often! He would if I wasn't well.

Dale's not a home maker kind of guy, but he has been so good to me, especially when I had cancer. And he's still being pretty good to me.

My husband rarely lifts a finger around here. I shoveled part of the driveway the other day because I had brushed a lot of snow off my car. I can only do so much with my bad shoulders, so basically around my car. He hasn't gone out there to finish the job. Now we got another hit of snow today. It's frustrating. You got a keeper for sure.

@1creekgirl I have had fibromyalgia for 28 years. He was a pretty good helper when the kids were younger, but today I was surprised that he did FA all day. Just watched movies.

I'm sorry to hear that, I know it's disappointing. For most of our marriage, Dale did all the outside work and I did the inside. But cancer changed that, although I'm doing more around here now.

@1creekgirl I feel like I'm falling apart. My knees always give me trouble. Was recommended I have knee replacement about 25 years ago. I said no way. I had so many surgeries after the car accident when I was a teen, that I do not want any unnecessary surgeries. I have hung in there and even off prescription medicine now. I just started back with my essential oil therapy and it is helping my knees a lot. Now my hip is bothering me and my neck and back also take their turns. Getting old is not fun!

Thanks, hopefully soon. The injection is for my neck, but my back is really bad again. One treatment at a time, though.

I too treasure the little things, too. Like when George picks up his underwear or anything off the floor. It's the little acts of kindness.

That would mean a lot to me too and sometimes just acts of kindness mean more than any gift money can buy. I would have been smiling ear to ear finding the kitchen all cleaned up when I woke up from that nap.

For having 58 years of being together and for your husband to be seemingly still strong at his age, I can say, this is a story really to tell. A one in a million indeed. I am so happy for you.
