Hot Dr. Pepper

I was watching the local morning news yesterday morning, and on the segment, “What Caught Our Eye”, one of the news anchors mentioned an online video she saw of a woman making Hot Dr. Pepper, a drink her family made every Christmas season. Fast forward to today, and a lot of viewers wrote in that their families did the same thing. Back in the 1960s, Dr. Pepper had marketed their soda as a classic hot holiday drink. You put Dr. Pepper in a slow cooker, cut up lemon slices in it, squeeze in some of that fresh lemon juice, and then let it “cook”. The hosts made it this morning, and they weren’t crazy about it. Did you ever hear about that? Would you try it? I don’t think I would.

Oh oh oh! So maybe about the mid 90s, I microwaved a mug of Dr. Pepper to drink it hot . . . I don't know where I came up with that. I liked it better than cold - and I wasn't even a soda drinker nor a Dr. Pepper fan . Interesting about the lemon. When I was a kid, my mom would pack me fresh lemonade for my Saturday lunch and my friend got a can of Pepsi. We'd share by mixing them together . . . we loved our drink concoction .

You know I'm up for trying most things just once. But hot Dr pepper with lemon doesn't sound remotely interesting enough for me to try. It just sounds gross. I don't even like the flavors they offer for Dr pepper now. Ew.

@thislittlepennyearns Oh, okay thank you. They did have a Strawberries and Cream Dr. Pepper that was tasty if you never tried it. I got some on accident once, and it was really tasty.

It doesn't sound like something I would be interested in trying, but I don't drink pop even cold.

I have not heard about this and I think it sounds awful, I like my Dr Pepper Zero cold. BTW I did try once in Latvia to cook with Coke. They say your pot roast will be really tender, We cooked it and cooked it and then could still kill someone with it if bashed on the head, Never again,

My aunt that I mention so often (the one I was named after) introduced our family to hot Dr. Pepper when I was really young, like maybe 2nd grade? I remember my sister and I trying it, and absolutely loving it--probably part of our love of it was that the adults liked it, so of course we felt grown up to get to have what they were having. It was also a big treat, as drinking soda was not nearly as big of a thing for most people as it is now. If you've never tried it, you should--once, anyway. You know I am no lover of sodas, but I do have good memories of having this treat. Thanks for the reminder, it made me smile!

I think I have had this minus the lemon, Just Dr. P straight. Warmed. It would seem to me that it would kill the fizz and that is part of what I drink a soda for anyway. When I worked at a Mexican Restaurant in Midwest City their orange soda tasted nasty in my opinion. So I would mix it with Sprite and put lemon wedges around the rim. Was Zamudios' restaurant before your time?

Regular Dr. Peper has an after taste I can't stand. Cooking it down would only make it sweeter and much worse.

Now that you mention it I may have heard about this once before in the past. I've never tried it. Don't think I want to.
