Luncheon was an excellent affair today in a Middle Eastern place off Princes street. We ordered an array of small dishes all tasting well and smelling better. Perfect.
And the people-watching was great too. The was a woman on her own at one table, maybe around 75 years of age, who could have made more of herself than she did. She sat over a full bottle of wine and a series of small dishes. She was there when we arrived and was still there when we left. There was a sadness hanging about her, and an air of loneliness seemed to have accumulated around her table. She wore a Christmassy sweater and maybe this was her Christmas treat to herself.
Directly opposite me and sitting in front of a window was a skinny young man with short hair and a fulsome beard in the company of a cuddly young woman. The sun shone right through his sticking out ears turning them the colour of apricots. I’ve never seen such transparent ears.
Half a bottle of Shiraz jollied me on my way thereafter.

whenever i see people like that old lady, i want to join them and make them feel less lonely - but what if they actually love being alone and they're completely fine with it?

Some people do have strange ears - and feet! Have you ever studied people's feet and their funny toes?

@judyev I’m an inveterate student of such things, but I usually manage somehow to keep my observations to myself. When I worked in reception at the ER in a hospital in Belfast a distressed elderly man appeared with a large, swollen, ruddy, pick-marked nose on his face. I asked him, “Are you here about your nose?” He said, “No, my wife was just brought in by ambulance, can you tell me how she is?”
