Thanks for the Christmas Present, VA!

Wow, talk about fast service! On December 19 I had an occupational therapy appointment at the VA to see them about some help for my hands. Can you believe that, in less than a week, the devices they ordered have arrived? Pictured is what is called a “hot mitt.” It is heavy, and big enough for both of my hands. It goes halfway up to the elbow. And oooh, is it nice! The primary reason for this is to warm hands that have problems, like arthritis (which I have) or Reynaud’s (which I also have). It works. Splendidly. Backstory: I’ve had Reynaud’s all my life. I was telling my sister-in-law about how, as a child, I’d sit on the furnace floor vent after dinner because I was cold in the winter. (My brother was there to verify it.) Reynaud’s is actually great to have in the summer; however, in the winter, it’s a royal cold pain in the hands. I mentioned it to the occupational therapist and he told me something I didn’t know: they make mitts for treating it! You just plop that mitt into the microwave for two minutes, and then stick your hands in it. The heat, according to the instructions, lasts about an hour, but my hands warmed up (and returned to normal color) long before that. Thanks for the Christmas present, VA! My now-warm hands greatly appreciate it! So will my water bill because I won’t have to sit in a tub of hot water after dinner to warm up. From all of me to all of you, have a blessed Christmas, whether you celebrate it religiously, secularly, or not at all.

I can’t believe I got it that quickly. He said one to three weeks, and to expect more along the “three week” side because it was right before Christmas. Well, April Fool in December!

Got compression gloves, too, and strength putty to play with when the arthritis starts hurting.

Well, that's nice. I just put my hands into my armpits to warm them up. Of course, that sometimes makes my body cold.

@LadyDuck — good luck with that. I moved enough as a kid and while in the Navy to know that they’re going to have to DRAG me out of this house.

Me too! They’re clumsy in size, but I understand why (they have a cover over the thermal packs). Can’t believe that only the very tips of my fingers are “nippy,” not COLD the way they normally are after dinner. Merry Christmas!

The brand they sent is Champ Hotmitt. I would imagine there are plenty more brands at less “therapeutic” sizes and costs.

I have arthritis and I know about that pain. I also have a weird pain that just hits me anywhere in the body at any time. It is extremely painful and only lasts a few seconds. Pain is pain. I am sure glad to hear that these mitts help you.

I have that “oh, let’s just have some shooting pain in the (insert body region here) for a minute” as well. I don’t need that because I’m a hypochondriac to begin with. I did find an article in a newspaper from the early 60s that confirmed that people with arthritis can tell the weather…so we’re good for something. Hope you’ve had a good day.
