Do you like old movies?

I really do enjoy many of them. They are easy to watch and not violent… there is enough of that in our world already. The last two weeks I have watched Gone With the Wind, ( twice, I love that movie!) It’s a Wonderful Life, The Happiest Millionaire, Home Alone and the sequel after it, and National Velvet. Oh, and Steel Magnolias. Tonight, it’s The Sound of Music. What a classic movie. So much chemistry between Julie Andrew’s and Christopher Plummer. I don’t really have a favorite, I just like the old movies. Do you have any favorite old movies?

@thislittlepennyearns I love that movie. I’ve seen it more times than I can count. It was an old movie when I was young. I think that was a good present to give her.

Is Home Alone an old movie? I guess it depends what you define as old. Gone With the Wind is most definitely, but not one I like to watch. I think it’s more for the ladies. The Sound of Music is a great movie, and it’s on every Christmas here in the UK, and often other times throughout the year. I’ve watched it many times, mainly because I love Julie Andrews. I prefer her other ‘hit’ movie - Mary Poppins, which is regularly shown too. As for real oldies, I love Laurel and Hardy, Charlie Chaplin, and the like. I know they are all crazy slapstick movies, but they still make me laugh.

@MarieCoyle It’s crazy that Home Alone is 34 years old. It was a big hit here too and played every Christmas. Like Laurel and Hardy, it’s very slapstick, so I’m surprised you don’t like them also. I used to like the old Westerns, such as The Searchers and How the West Was Won. I also liked the Spaghetti Westerns with Clint Eastwood, but these aren’t shown so much these days.

Home Alone was released in 1990. It was a huge hit here in the US, and is now somewhat of a classic. I loved Mary Poppins, too. I never got into the Laurel and Hardy, Charlie Chaplin thing...they were popular before my time? Not sure why, but I do like movies with a plot of sorts, I like funny movies a lot, but I just never got into theirs.

@Orson_Kart I do like some Westerns, yes. I love movies about history, or with historical figures...I like anything about how the US was settled, the Oregon Trail, California gold rush, pioneer movies, you name it. If it's history, I will no doubt like it. I do like funny as well.

I love vintage movies and old Hollywood. Ones from about 1935 on up to the 60s which had little or nothing to offer. To Kill A Mockingbird and The Wizard of Oz were two great ones. I think the older ones have more quality and people acted better back then.

@MarieCoyle ..... this true. If I feel like the language and other stuff I will watch a more recent one. But many times I find myself watching an older one from better times.

I think the older movies are just different, and in many cases it was basically a different world then. Hard to explain, time changes everything.

@celticeagle There definitely was more respect. I know language in the current movies is often an issue and can keep a movie that would have been a great family movie from being viewed by many. A person has to be selective, and it's hard.

I always liked the Topper movies & the TV series but they are so hard to find. The first Topper movie with Cary Grant is my favorite, if I had the money to spare I could buy the DVDs for them but $25-$30 is more than I'm willing to spend

I've always liked the funny ghost movies/shows or trekky type movies/shows so Topper fit right in.

Did you watch the 'old' National Velvet with Elizabeth Taylor and Mickey Rooney? I guess even the remake would be seen as 'old' now.

@MarieCoyle In my view, they're rarely as good as the originals but maybe I'm biased.

@JudyEv No, I feel the same way. It’s rather like a song you really like, and then someone comes along and records it for another version. The second time around is not as good as the original version.

Yes, I watched that version. I don't want to see the remake of that one, sometimes remakes just spoil the memories of what was.

I do enjoy watching old movies. They had so much better storylines back in those days, and actually took the time to develop the characters. Plus, life was simpler back then, so it's a refreshing break from today's hectic world.

I agree, the movies seemed to have more realism, the people were more like people we actually know, not plastic or fake...and yes, very memorable characters.

There are many vintage movies I like. Cannot single a movie although as my favourite. I do like Home Alone and its sequels , loved Mask , Lion king (did not like the sequel or presequel) , Titanic , Jaws and its sequels , Jurrasic Park and sequels ,Italian job are what comes at top of my head for now. I love the thriller , action and comedy genre and ok with romantic and horror genre. For action , prefer with less or moderate violence , not the big violence ones! I do watch some of these movies when they come up in OTT or youtube or perhaps even on TV. Glad to know your chocie. Enjoy the weekend!

Oh, you’ve picked good ones! I love Meet Me in St. Louis (I watch it every Christmas), The Pirate with Gene Kelly, Easter Parade, Swiss Family Robinson, and Gone with the Wind is one I used to watch with my late mom once a year. My mom’s favorite was The Courtship of Eddie’s Father with Ron Howard as a very young child. Have you seen it? It’s so charming. We would quote it to each other.

OH, I love that movie!! Robin Williams at his best. The story, the humor, the very sad...I think part of the reason I liked it is that my uncle and my Dad did. I watched it with my Dad right before he passed away, several times.
