Yacht Rock: A Dockumentary How am I ever going to write this "review"... "So much to say.... free to, love only you". I didn't want to even see this, but someone gave me their password, and whatever.. The last 40 years of music/movies suck, and this documentary explains it but not ironically. At one section, they even demonstrated how the music was incestuous, including "Steal Away" which is a rip-off of a bad song already.. One "musician" said how the music had Rhodes, and you can clearly hear the songs he's mentioning that are the keyboards that helped killed music. Wimpy music, although even a band like ELP used them on "Love Beach".. Horrible Yamaha corny keyboards that became the 80s. Those interviewed under 60 are ALL lame. A "journalist" who says "um like" every other word. And they don't know what they're talking. One talks about juggling pomegranates. Repellent. Michael McDonald ruined TWO bands... The Doobie Brothers (who were awesome before he joined) and Steely Dan.. Which brings me to a period in my life - 2008.. I had put up an advertisement "Drummer Looking For a Gig" thing at Guitar Center. I named my favorite bands, and got a call one day from a guitarist (where we played) saying, "You can play Steely Dan?" By the way, the "musician" who said no one can play "Peg" is simply retarded. Yeah, HE can't play past the second note ("it's like on two strings"). It was the first song we played. I love Steely Dan, saw them 4 times live, but not that song.. After a nice performance/jam of some other Steely Dan songs, we talked about the vision. He wanted to play "smooth" stuff. I did not. He'd mention music where is parents went to eat. I think he mentioned Red Lobster. I've never been there, but I had no idea a band would play there, so he must have meant the music on in the background. And then the bass player mentioned Christopher Cross, and I just say I wouldn't do it.. But I didn't think John Lennon's "Mind Games" was a good song to play live, despite Lennon being one of my favorite songs. I love the song, but some are for listening but are not good songs to play live. I brought in a friend on keyboards/vocals for a few reasons. We found one keyboardist who was good, but was either late, or called in, and this guy was in my first band and my former next-door neighbor. I wanted to play more "rockin" stuff, including some Pink Floyd, which we did, but the guitarist "got his way" by not playing the solo well, while making eye contact if it was one of "his" songs.. Never liked Toto, Kenny Loggins.. A lot of other soulless singers. Formulaic garbage. No swing, No song. "What a Fool Believes" is either a robot on drums, or a "drum machine". And from then on, it was more plastic, if it was even played by a human. And it's not a knock on soft rock, because there's some good songs.. I love Terry Kath era Chicago, my favorite bands along with The Doors and Pink Floyd, but they had some great 70s ballads.. "Yacht Rock" will never Rock The Boat. P.S. - I found the 2008 show we did... There's one set missing (we did a 4-hour show) with almost all of the "Aja" album.. My "friend" drank too much, and getting paid $70 (after food and soft drinks) was enough. I went to Nevada (from Michigan) and join a band, and they had their own substance abuser.. The audio quality is garbage. The vocals are bad.. The guitarist didn't turn up (despite doing an early sound-check). The following day was another ordeal.. The guy who started the band didn't care about money - he was making modules for Bootsy Collins. The money was the last thing I cared about, but some people can play/sound great at rehearsal but not live and the only way you can test it out is by playing live.. https://youtu.be/a55pyQsI3GQ
