One Hundred Thousand

When I got my car, just before Memorial Day weekend 2020 and just after the lockdown was lifted, I named it Bestill (or Be Still). It’s from my favorite verse in the Bible, Psalms 46:10: “Be still and know that I am God.” Yes, that’s an odd name for a car. Cars aren’t meant to “be still.” But for the last four years and eight months, it’s taken me countless places where I certainly could “be still and know” that He is God. On my way home from Lexington today the car hit the 100,000 mile mark. That’s about 22,000 miles a year. You’ve been along with me for a lot of them: to the northern plains of the Dakotas, Wyoming, and Montana; to Florida; to Texas; and, to a lot of places in between. The weather is supposed to get cold soon, meaning they might start saying that dirty S word, so I might take off after my doctor’s appointment on the 10th. Where will I go? You’ll be the first to know. Happy 100,000 mile birthday, Bestill. The photo is the odometer at the magic moment.

You and Bestill have been well traveled these past few years . May you have many more cool adventures in the New Year . . . I don't know where you will go, but I look forward to reading about it all .

@much2say — I need to, haven’t been to California since 1985. (Came out and saw an episode of Brothers being taped.)

I bought my car new in 2020 just before the COVID lockdown and it is just about to hit the 16,000 mile mark. Absolutely absurd but here we are. It will be paid off in like 3 or 4 months.

Aw, that’s sweet. I have my dad’s wanderlust, but I moved enough thanks to his wanderlust…so I travel.

Cars are like my old German Shepherd and sharks. If they stop moving, they die. True story.

The way I put it is that Jay Leno can buy a car and park it in a garage, but I can’t.

That’s a lot of miles, and not something I’ve ever achieved in any car I’ve owned. Congrats! I love how you’ve captured the exact moment, and that the time is 1:11.

@FourWalls Yeah, Texas is a big place. At least according to the maps it is. I guess many people never leave it to visit other states in their lifetime. It’s great you have a reliable car if you like travelling.

@Orson_Kart — I do like traveling and I do have a great, reliable car. There’s a “romantic” in me that would like to travel by train, but America doesn’t have that luxury.

Now THAT, I didn’t plan. I’m not that coordinated. There’s a website that says you can put THREE United Kingdoms in the state of Texas, so I have a lot of territory to explore. (Oh, and there’s a Liverpool, Texas, too! )

@Tampa_girl7 — oh, yes. This year I was in Meridian to visit the birthplace of Jimmie Rodgers. If I had gone through Navy schooling I would have been stationed at NAS Meridian (that’s where yeomen and other administrative rates took schooling). I still need to go all the way down the Natchez Trace Parkway in Mississippi (I got off of it last year in Alabama). Still love the Gulf the best, though.

@FourWalls My husband is from the Delta. Have you ever been on the eastern side of Mississippi ? It is very hilly and has a totally different look than the Delta flatlands and cotton fields.

It does feel a little like magic when you see certain numbers, doesn't it? 12:34 on a digital clock particularly excites me.

Yes, those sweet rounded off numbers. The OCD in me keeps my checking account even, so if I have $1,102.33 in my account I’ll put $102.33 in savings. OCD, yes, and it also helps me look at my checking account and know it’s balanced.
