Polar Vortex

Has anyone heard about a Polar Vortex possibly coming through the 2 nd week of January ? Last night my husband and I were watching television and my phone and iPad started dinging and danging. A group chat of some of my family members was going on about a Polar Vortex that would drop even Mississippi into temperatures of 0 to -10 below Fahrenheit. I hadn’t heard anything about it. I hope that they just came across a hoax, but glad I got a warning just in case it’s real. I am going to listen to the weather forecasts closely and be prepared just in case.

I have heard about cold weather coming through. I wonder how long it will last? It makes me nervous though..last time we hadsomething like that we had a horrendous snow storm and power was out for 3 days.

Some of my family are pretty panicky. We have a kerosene heater that we could use if need be. If it does happen I’d be most concerned about wet ice or snow making the power go out. I keep perishable foods on hand. I really hope it doesn’t happen.

@Tampa_girl7 I have a propane heater that is designed to be used indoors as well. After that last terrible storm I took some steps to be better prepared in an emergency. I wish I had a generator though.

@snowy22315 A generator would be good. We have thought of getting one for our home in West Virginia. It would work automatically if power goes out.

I doubt it is a hoax. There is a very credible weatherman l listen to on Youtube ,who warned some islands in the Caribbean to watch out for very chilly weather on the 6th and 12th of January. He said this will result from cold arctic air - the coldest in a long time - which will be heading our way from North America.

@Tampa_girl7 Just have to be prepared. Get me some socks , definitely a blanket and heavy sleeping wear. These cold spells could last up to 3 days and this one is expected to be the coldest.

I haven't heard of it either but best to be prepared. Our temperatures have been on the warmer side so I wouldn't be surprised if we get hit with freezing temperatures.

It warmed up here too. I really hope it isn’t real bad if it happens. I can’t even imagine -10 in Mississippi. I have been in extreme cold other places, but they are not prepared for it here.

I just heard it. We will see if it happens. A lot of changes is being experienced lately due to climate change, like extreme temperatures, erratic weather conditions among others.

The meteorologists here are saying that next week will get bitter cold, and possibly have snow--they aren't sure of how much snow, it's too early to tell. They think the cold spell will be around for awhile. But, it's winter, and January is always cold. I will hunker down as much as I can manage.

@Tampa_girl7 Hi, Marie, how are you doing? We already have it pretty cold here, but the winds are concerning, as when it gets that cold and windy, the wind chill can simply be deadly. I always worry for those who have to work outside. We are going to do our best to stay warm. Most people are very concerned about the heating costs, as they are high and with temperatures like that, furnaces will run non-stop.

I just looked it up, and it looks like they are right although I don’t think the temps will get that low in Oklahoma where I am. Today it will be 68 degrees here so I guess I should enjoy it now. I don’t mind cold weather, but not pipe freezing weather. Be safe!

That's so cold - that's not typical out there, right? I hadn't seen that on the news out here. I truly hope the temps don't drop down that far, but I suppose it'd be good to prepare anyway . . . stay warm!!!

@Tampa_girl7 I hope so too! Or if it's not, I hope it fizzles and that it won't be as cold as they're saying.

I haven't heard anything but here we rarely get any really cold winters and if we do the coldest I can remember was 30f during the day which happened decades ago.

I lived through such weather when I was in Latvia, Quite often in January there was a period of two weeks during which the temps stayed as low as - 20 or -30. Everything froze up and then came the thaw,

I have heard of polar vortex, but only in US weather reports. Don't think we get them over here, although it is supposed to get pretty chilly by the weekend

I have seen news about Polar Vortex in many years. I think it happened in places in US a few years back, in the year 2007 and a couple of more years. Cities like Washington DC, NY City seem more affected by this. I have not seen reports about region or state wise impact. I think it might not be a hoax, but well how accurate is this weather forecast is something that would be clear by the second week of January only.

We are having very mild temperatures here right now-local ski hills are having to close as they cannot make snow that will last due to the warmth. But this will change, and we will get seasonable weather, but I have not heard of any polar vortex coming, but it wouldn't surprise me as that usually happens in January.

Oh no! I just changed my washer and dryer delivery to the 2nd week of January because there's a Winter Storm Watch for this week. Have a good New Year's Eve.
