Singled out for honour.

Surely you must have paused to wonder why the English speaking world goes out of its way to refer to the country Côte d’Ivoire by the name by which it knows itself, while it anglicises so many others. We have dropped the anglicised form ‘Ivory Coast’ in favour the name by which the country knows itself, yet have not extended the same courtesy to, for example, Italia, Deutschland, España, Guyane, Norge or Danmark? Why just Côte d’Ivoire? With whom does one have to sleep to be granted this honour? The King?

I've only ever heard Ivory Coast around here. I took 5 years of French in school so I would understand that name as well. I've just never heard it referred to like that.

Same... Four years of French in high school. I've never heard it called anything except Ivory Coast.

Don't forget that Turkey is now Turkiye. Did someone sleep with President Erdogan? (NB: I added all the special characters in these names but they disappeared when I submitted the response)

We've noticed Turkey now has a new pronounciation and has for a while.
