Finding Medical Help on New Years Day

My grandson is 22 and is our resident cat whisperer. He is so calm and good with them all. Even the two wilder young ones Colbert and Finn.
Early yesterday morning he had gone to pick up Finn to check an owee on his side, the wilder(spends most of his time outdoors) of the two young ones and must have touched the sore area. In a spit second Finn bit him. It hurt but my grandson is used to it in dealing with this group of odd ball kiittles. Luckily he had his tetanus shot just about a month ago at his wellness appointment.
A little later in the day he came to me complaining of it hurting. I had him soak in some elixir and try not to use the finger(it's the index finger of his right hand)for the remainder of the day. We are all tough and I really didn't take it too seriously.
Later in the day he came to me again. By now his finger was VERY swollen. I started calling our usual medical places. Of course none were open on New Year's Day. I called the non-emergency at the closer of the cities two hospitals. I told the nice lady who answered the situation and that I realized it wasn't an ambulance situation but we had no money until Friday for transportation. The lady connected us to a transport place. The lady there said she couldn't have any transport here until about an hour.
Finally an hour later the transport came and took my grandson and my daughter to St. Lukes.
I got an email from My Chart telling me what had transpired before they even called me. They had prescribed two meds he was to take for a week. One he takes three times a day and, the other he takes twice.
We had a bit of a situation with the Lyft driver that the hospital called to get them home. They can only wait 4 minutes and the two had to walk clear to the opposite side of the hospital to get to the main entrance where the driver was waiting. The driver waited for them and you can believe I gave him an excellent review for being such a nice human.
Today his finger feels much better after only a couple applications of the pills.
Why is it emergencies either happen on the weekend or on a holiday?

Tetanus is caused by a common bacterium Clostridium tetani. It can enter the body through any wound, deep puncture wounds are particularly dangerous. Vaccination is very effective but without it, tetanus is often fatal. I wonder if there will be an increase in fatalities as a result of the anti-vax idealogy?

@shaggin Yeah, one year we had some flooding in the area and all the people who had been exposed to the water by doing clean up were offered free tetanus shots. There are lots of ways to get it besides rusty metal.

I am glad you can get transportation even though it was New Year's Day. Sounds like they got very proactive with treating him, too.

Seems so. It hurts a lot less than it did.

I told him he needs to get some leather gloves to use when dealing with our two outdoor cats.

What about an Urgent Care location or were they closed? I'm glad he got some help. I hope you all have a good weekend.
