Snow fun sledding turned deadly in Illinois.

I remember a lot of people used to tow their kids after a good snowfall--kids on sleds, saucers, inner tubes, anything that could have a rope tied to it and then to whatever they were towing the kids with. Due to many accidents and deaths, it is not recommended to do this anymore. This dad tied a rope to his 4-seater ATV, and the kids climbed in a giant inner tube. They took off...one child is dead. The other is fighting for his life. Whatever you do, don't do this. I cannot imagine how that father feels. Beyond terrible.

I wish I could say that I'm surprised, but I'm not. It's tragic that people take such riscks.

Such a cost for a joyride in the snow. ATV's seem to really hurt a lot of people, they just aren't careful.

@kaylachan I have heard ''oh, it's fine, we always do this!'' way too many times. That father will never get past this.

@rakski I hope so, too. Prevention is way better than big regrets and the loss of a child.

We used to do all that here in Idaho too. We just don't get the amount of snow we used to get.

We really don't get as much every winter as we used to, either.

@celticeagle Yes, many areas now get weather and temperatures they do not expect.

I suppose some parents think it's ok because that's what they did as kids . . . it's fun and most likely nothing is going to happen. But oh, things CAN happen - and in an instant - it will change lives forever .. How devastating .

@MarieCoyle Yes, life can end. And that can't be fixed. I read that article and can picture how that all went down . . . and I'm here thinking what were they thinking?! I mean, it wouldn't take a physics expert to figure that one out. Those poor kids. And their dad is going to have to live with that the rest of his life.

@much2say I think it may have not ever entered the father's mind that it could be dangerous, if he grew up doing those things. Some people just won't listen and always think that bad things won't happen...but they do, more often than we want to hear about, or see.

Oh, for sure...we've all heard ''it's fine, I grew up doing that!'' Like you say, life can change, or end, in an instant.

That is soo sad. Hope the other child will make it. Losing a child is the worst and then to be responsible for it I can't imagine

We never used to hear about such accidents. That does not mean they did not happen. I know as I child we did not do that, but we did other dangerous things.

Of course, as a child we always thought it was great fun to get to ride in the back of someone's pick up truck...but that's not allowed now, and that's a good thing. I don't worry a lot about my own driving, but I do worry about a lot of other people not being careful.

It was cool in the 70s for people to do that in Daytona Beach (tie a tube behind a car and go down the beach). I ache for the father, he must be in unbearable distress.

That Dad must be really hurting for his actions. I've seen adults allowing others to hang onto their open car door on an icy road. Just a horrible idea.

@MarieCoyle I don't understand it, either. Last year I upset a neighborhood girl. She looked to be maybe 12?? She was allowed to drive an ATV on my small town street- had a helmet on, but in my mind she did not belong racing on a street. I said something to her. My bad.

@sallypup Oh, wow. ATV's are not allowed on any town or city streets here. And if a 12 year old were driving it, he or she would have to be on private property only. I'm kind of surprised it's allowed.

@MarieCoyle Me either. At the same time, there are just a lot of dumb people who either have no concept of danger, or don't appreciate life. It's just, unfortunately, the world we live in. It's like the people who we CONTINUALLY have to read about who leave kids in cars to die of heat stroke, or have their kids kidnapped when someone steals their car running into a store for a Coke. It just never ends, and it never ceases to amaze me how little people use their brains. You can't fix stupid isn't just a cute phrase we like to use. It's the God's honest truth.
