Feeling a bit jealous

At the weekend I was helping to create props and scenery for our upcoming pantomime, and as we were working people were chatting and the conversation turned to holidays. Several people mentioned their upcoming plans and reviewed previous destinations. They talked about Mexico, Costa Rica, Egypt, the Maldives, St Lucia…. Many ‘exotic’ locations. And I admit I started to feel a little bit jealous. Our holiday this year was most of a week in cloudy and cool Paris, which was nice, but not the same at all. Also I felt a little bit put out that we are trying not to add to the climate crisis by flying, but all the places mentioned would be difficult or even impossible to get to any other way. So we are staying close to home for the benefit of everyone else, while everyone else is jetting off around the world without a second thought. And I admit I would like to go to many of those same places – although not for the kind of holiday they were talking about. Lying on a beach is not for me; after ten minutes I’m thinking ‘OK I’ve done that, what next?’ Are you a beach holiday person and would you fly half way around the world just to lie in the sun?
