Feeling a bit jealous

At the weekend I was helping to create props and scenery for our upcoming pantomime, and as we were working people were chatting and the conversation turned to holidays.
Several people mentioned their upcoming plans and reviewed previous destinations. They talked about Mexico, Costa Rica, Egypt, the Maldives, St Lucia…. Many ‘exotic’ locations.
And I admit I started to feel a little bit jealous. Our holiday this year was most of a week in cloudy and cool Paris, which was nice, but not the same at all.
Also I felt a little bit put out that we are trying not to add to the climate crisis by flying, but all the places mentioned would be difficult or even impossible to get to any other way. So we are staying close to home for the benefit of everyone else, while everyone else is jetting off around the world without a second thought.
And I admit I would like to go to many of those same places – although not for the kind of holiday they were talking about. Lying on a beach is not for me; after ten minutes I’m thinking ‘OK I’ve done that, what next?’
Are you a beach holiday person and would you fly half way around the world just to lie in the sun?

@fleura Lying on a beach with my eyes closed sounds so depressing. When people tell me they’re going to Barbados or wherever it conjures for me a picture of rows of sunloungers on a beach and boom boom music at night. Don’t get me started on cruises. Give me a louche back street in Paris any day. My next jaunt will be to a very cold Donegal in March.

When Pretty and I go somewhere, it's to do something, not just sit/lay around in the sun. That's boring after a little bit. We go to swim or to an amusement park or to visit someone. Beaches are pretty but not for me.

I want to travel to lots of places. Last year, I had three holidays (two short breaks in the UK, and one coach holiday to Germany). The coach holiday was my second time abroad. My sister-in-law recently came back from a Caribbean cruise, which sounded very good. I know a few people who have cruised various places.
I couldn't sit on a beach all the time. I love the beach and the sea, and will happily spend some time there. I would hate to do nothing but sit on a beach. I never understood people who visit the same place to do the same things that they'd do at home.

I can lie in the sun at home for free. But some places would be fun to see

I have to admit to a bit of jealousy here where everyone is going off on luxury cruises here and there. While I guess we could afford we don't really want to spend the amount of money they're asking for some of these trips. But it's hard not to wish.

I can lie in the sun at home. When we used to travel we were GO GO GO! We never burned daylight and would travel up to sunset. We wanted to see as much as we could see. Have a good day.

I am a bit of a home bird when it comes to holidays. I, too, am worried about climate change and my trips have been cycling and using the trains for longer journeys. I am hoping this summer I may finally get my trip to the Normandy beaches on the go
