Making rogues out of honest men

I’ve sometimes heard the phrase ‘making rogues out of honest men’ but I can’t find any reference to it on the internet. The saying came to mind when we had to update information on our social security documents. These were to do with changing vehicles. We sold a car and a caravan then bought a motor-home so we had to give details about these transactions. When it came to giving the make of the motor-home, Vince put ‘Iveco motor-home’. It’s true that the motor-home body is on an Iveco chassis but the vehicle is marketed as a Winnebago. Being an Iveco meant we could put a lower value on it and our pension would not affected so much. Are you sometimes able to fudge figures to your advantage? The photo shows our Iveco motor-home. You’ve seen it before.

I would think that would be or should be "making honest men out of rogues?" It's always good to do that if you can. My dad used to do that to save on taxes. He was a mechanic and often bought used cars, fixed them up and then sold them.

We didn't lie but if we'd said it was a Winnebago they would have questioned the valuation.

Giving it a lower value is worth it.

They accepted the valuation on an Iveco but might have thought a Winnebago would be worth more.

Is that your only vehicle now, or do you still have a car to get about town?

Vince had an old-age crisis and we swapped a 3-year-old Kia Cerato for a 10-year-old Jaguar. So we have a motor-home and the Jag.

@BarBaraPrz It's good but the motor-home is going to be a bit big if we want to park in the middle of a town. We'll need to remember to buy what we need before going anywhere where it would be hard to park.

We didn't tell a lie but they wouldn't regard an Iveco as valuable as a Winnebago.
