Cameras from Lacock, England

I wrote about a West Australian camera museum and was reminded of seeing another camera collection somewhere in England. Replying to a comment by myLotter Ron Rybs, I went looking for photos from the place. And it was at Lacock, about 100 miles from London. There is an interesting abbey there and a small display featuring William Henry Fox Talbot (1800-1877). Talbot was a polymath and, among other things, he invented special photographic processes which led to major advancements in the field. He was also skilled in integral calculus and did research in electricity, optics, chemistry and etymology. A plague in the exhibition states that he taught himself Egyptian hieroglyphics and was the first to decipher Assyrian cuneiform writing, translating a number of tablets for the British museum. It’s a shame the photo isn’t better. We were there in 2015.

That's great to know. But you know what, when ever i heard the word abbey or read that word it reminds me of the von trap family singers, and the sound of music ost just automatically plays in my head. I know the movie location plot was in Austria, but whenever i heard that word, its reminds me of Maria and her family,

That was a great film, wasn't it? I'm not surprised a single word can bring back such memories.

I think he was into archeology as well and owned some tablets with heiroglyphics. More thieving from Egypt!

I see those real old cameras (with the flash pan and the photographer with his head under a black cover) and wonder how those things worked…and I’m so thankful that we have our phones today. Could you imagine trying to set all of that up when you see a buffalo or a kangaroo in a park????
