The mistake at the oral surgeons office today

I took my daughter to an oral surgeon appointment today. It was supposed to be a consultation appointment to have her wisdom teeth removed. I told her since she had X-rays not long ago that were sent to them to refuse it if they tried to get her to do more. After sitting in the waiting room almost two hours she came out with a follow up appointment for cavity fillings and another for a consultation appointment to see about having her wisdom teeth out. All they did was clean her teeth and they made her get new X-rays done. I called to cancel the cavity filling appointment since we will just have that done at the usual office a mile away instead of this one 30 miles away. They said they never received records from her current dentist and so they established her as a new patient. Although the hygienist told my daughter the X-rays would be free today that is incorrect the insurance isn’t going to pay for X-rays again so soon after she had them done at the previous dentist. She should have been put in the system as a referral but she was put in as a new patient by a secretary who was new. What a mess. Now she has to sign release papers to have X-rays and information transferred and the emails they sent with the release isn’t coming through to my email or my daughters. I have to call tomorrow when the offices are open and find out why my daughter’s previous dentist did not send the information and X-rays to the oral surgeon. I knew I should have went in with her and talked to them today but her being an adult I didn’t think they would allow me in. Next time I will tell them that she has autism and needs me there until any procedure begins.

@AmbiePam once a mom always a mom . I just fee terrible for her they didn’t listen to her. She and her boyfriend who is also autistic work at a thrift store and have an apartment together. They have a limited income and can’t afford to waste money on things like this that were the dental offices mistake.

@shaggin It bothers me and she’s not my daughter! That office was completely irresponsible.

Your son and daughter both have autism? How did that happen? I wasn't aware of multiple kids in a family being diagnosed with it..but I suppose it can happen. Maybe you could explain to the insurance what happened..unfortunately, you will probably still end up having to pay though.

@snowy22315 my daughter was diagnosed with sensory processing disorder when she was about 2. I hadn’t thought much about it as she got older. When my son was around 7 or 8 and I stayed reading up on Asperger’s I said hmm a lot of the things sound like my daughter. He was diagnosed with it but she really wasn’t having any issues to bother looking into it more we just kind of figured she had it. She wanted an official diagnoses so she started talking to her psychiatrist about it and was diagnosed with autism maybe 4 months ago. Also OCD about a month ago. I had ocd and I’m sure they get autism from me as well. While I was never diagnosed a lot of the issues they have I have as well so I understand their thinking. We are all different though very different stims etc.

Some places don't charge for the first consultation and X-ray.

@wolfgirl569 the receptionist said the insurance isn’t going to cover the X-rays they did if she had them recently so they must not cover the first ones for free.

Sounds like a frustrating day and I hope that you don't have to pay for those new x-rays. I feel bad for your daughter that she has to have her wisdom teeth removed.

@Marilynda1225 I thinks they will make her pay but I’ll fight to at least get it reduced as it was their fault they didn’t listen to her and pressured into X-rays and telling her it would be free. I’ve had to call the one dental office today who told me they never sent a referral but the office would not return their calls. That office should have called and told us that I would have called them about it and gotten things rolling. So both dental offices faults at this point.

@thelme55 yes she likely will have to pay for the X-rays and I’m disgusted over it. It wasn’t her fault she tried to refuse and they made her feel like she couldn’t and that they would be free anyway. It could be hundreds of dollars or more now she will have to pay. I’m going to try to get it at least significantly lowered the bill if it arrives.

@allknowing yes it really is. I talked to the dental office who said they never were able to shed her referral to the oral surgeon because they would return her call after a fee attempts. Had she called and told my daughter and I think we could have gotten that taken care of so both offices are at fault!

@allknowing I wont know for awhile I don’t think but if we get a bill I will try to fight it to at least get it reduced considerably as X-rays can be hundreds of dollars or more.

@jstory07 I had my three year old with me and there was a sign on the wall that said only one adult could go in with a minor so I thought her being an adult they wouldn’t let me go in. I will make sure to go next time and if they don’t let me I will make a stink about it!

@Daddyevil I’m sure I can get things on the ball records sent etc but she will likely be stuck with the expensive X-ray bill. I will try to fight it for her to have it reduced at least since it was their mistake.

We had a somewhat similar experience - sent daughter to her dental appointment on her own - I figured she was 17 and could manage to get there at the right time without me needing to be there, since I was doing something else at the time. She came out with one of those forms with pictures of teeth, without any indications on it of what needed to be done to which teeth and just a scribble saying she needed a filling costing £900!! Typically she had no idea of what was wrong or which teeth were affected. I should have gone in with her. Instead we moved to a different dentist where they treated her for free (NHS patient)! I think I will be moving there myself soon.

@DaddyEvil ahh that’s about how my memory is too. I think it’s short term memory issues. That’s a great idea she writes it all down for you.

@Fleura even at 41 I struggle to remember information after it’s given to me. I’d have likely come out of your daughters appointment not having a clue what they said either . That’s wonderful the new office treated her for free!

I forget what doctors tell me but gradually remember the details over a couple of days. That gripes Pretty so she insists on going to doctor/dentist appointments with me. She writes everything in a notebook so we can refer to it later if needed.

These days people in dr offices of any kind don't do what they should & the patient has to pay for their screw up's which isn't right.

@2ndchances24 I feel so bad for her she is going to be so upset when that bill comes. They did a full panoramic X-ray and something else. It’s going to be costly. I’m going to fight to try to at least get it reduced as it was their mistake.

@2ndchances24 the dentist is supposed to transfer the records to them yesterday. It says on an email it takes 48 hours for the oral surgeons office to process them so I will call tomorow and see if they got them and then set up an appointment for her wisdom tooth removal consultation.

@shaggin ( I’m going to fight to try to at least get it reduced as it was their mistake.) Good luck with that You shouldn't have to pay a dime, but we know how that goes but I would take something with me to show she already had it done or have the dr's office call them & let them know it was already done.

@Barbaraprz wow that has been a long time then. It’s been about 2 1/2 years for me. I just don’t want to have to have someone watch my little one so I can go. When she’s in pre-K next year I’ll go or schedule it for a Monday when my older daughter has off and can go with me to watch my little one.
