I Will Be Making the Call Today

That's it. I'm done. And so is AT&T. Another $300 bill and I am sorry, but they can just pound sand. I have been wanting to get rid of the cable for a very long time and the trigger is finally being pulled. I will be making the call today to either cancel my TV service altogether or drastically change it. All I really want out of it are the local channels. Even there, there must be a way to get local channels without having to have a service. If I can get a TV service package for under $100 I will accept that offer. If not, I will cancel and find an alternative. 90% of everything we watch anymore we get easily enough between the three paid streaming services we have which are Prime, Netflix and Hulu. Anything else we get through the numerous free streaming services offered on our Roku. It's just not worth it anymore even if money is not the issue, the cost is. Especially when we aren't watching even 10% of what's offered 90% of the time. If something is reasonable, I'll enjoy at least having the convenience of something. But when the bill gets to be UNreasonable? Time to pull the plug and part ways.

I pulled the plug over a year ago and have no regrets.

I think we will be fine too. My wife and I have been discussing it for a long time and she has told me she's okay with it. Which was important considering she's the one who mostly watches TV. I hardly watch any TV at all.

It's a massive cost savings at $2100 per year. I know we will probably add or extend a current service which will cost something. But not anywhere near what we're paying now. Or, I should say were paying sine I already called and cancelled the TV portion of my service.

AT&T just doesn't know when to quit adding charges... I got rid of them years ago. And we haven't had cable in years and years. I get all kinds of streaming services for free. Why pay for it?

I haven't had any in years. I get my local news free.

I am thinking I can probably just go buy an antenna or something to pick up local channels.

@andriaperry I will look into it. I can't see paying extra for something that would otherwise be free.

@NJChicaa Interesting. I will check it out, unless I can just get local channels some other way. I really don't need the other channels. Our Netflix, Prime and Hulu give us pretty much what I am looking for.

I know very few people who still have cable TV. Here, if a person has cable and internet combined, it is now (as of last month) $340 a month. That's insane. I pay for only internet and one streaming service, Hulu--I get both local news stations and all the main big news stations. Tons of stuff to watch that I can never have time to watch. Roku is on the TV as well. Not to be insulting, but I am rather surprised you still have it. It's just sooooo expensive.

We have Hulu now, but we don't get any "live" TV access or local channels access. I wonder if I just have to upgrade my service to get that. I'd have to look into what that costs. This move saves us $2100 a year, so it's definitely worth it to do. As for why we waited so long, I guess it just came down to "I didn't want to pay it but we could afford it," but it was just beginning to really bother me about the cost and the fact that we stream more than watch TV and if that's the case, it was losing its "value."

@MarieCoyle What are you paying for your Hulu now if you don't mind me asking?

@porwest Hulu usually has special offers, check it out. I researched and decided what to go with and I can truthfully say I have way more shows and movies to watch for a lot less money. I get every mainstream news, live, not a day late. Both my local channels. You won’t miss cable.

I'm glad you're pulling the plug. I never liked AT&T. I only have cable because it's included in the rent. I have Roku and pay for the same services you do and a couple more.

Companies like spectrum, fios, etc. start off with giving you a really good promo to get you to switch and then soon enough the outrageous prices hit.

Looking at the numbers, I think you need to pull the plug, With OTT platforms and live TV with help of internet available , it is more economical than TV service. Besides the cost is getting higher. We should take advantage of times we have and look into doing things better. Sure , that may mean changes and doing things differently and moving out of our comfort zone. Personally , I stopped my TV service for last 5 months and mostly onto the OTT platforms. Since I watch less during weekdays and most things I watch are there on Prime and Disney+ , thought of cutting down and it has been a good financial decision. Good luck!
