A day of mixed experiences with dogs...

So my favorite came running to greet me, and went back and forth and pushed out her tongue a couple of times (actually more) to show she is looking forward to eat something, and of course, her tail doing fierce pendulum dance...all good...love such greeting. I cheated her. I gave her an omelette. Roxy thinks she is a royalty and is entitled to royal food only...will not touch anything that does not have meat...I wanted to give her peas but decided lets try egg first. I sprinkled a little bit of salt..because the last time she did not eat fried egg. She ate about five tablespoons very swiftly in search of the meat piece and then realized she has been cheated, so stopped eating. So I walked with her to an eatery and bought some chicken for her, and so she ate some more...but market stuff ...she does not relish as much as what is cooked at home. While returning the Afghan hound girl and Shiba Inu youngster...I gave them biscuits...and they were eating..........then a couple of goats and rams came to the spot...and these two became so ferocious ..the white hound girl ...she showed her teeth...oh boy she almost bit the hind of one of the rams...you'd think the goats are meek creatures......no...they stood their ground defiantly...the ram came aggressively to hit the dog ....who is fairly large. As if there was any chance against those canine teeth...had to diffuse the situation...the two were not listening...but eventually, the goat herd walked away and all animals are safe... So yeah, I feel confused...am I doing the right thing feeding these dogs? On the whole, it is a cut throat competition out there, among stray animals..

It's a risk. It's up to decide what's right.

I do not know if it was to protect their territory or to prevent the other four legged animals from sharing their food. Whatever it was - was quite scary. A few days ago, I saw a man being chased by a cow on the road...all cars stopped...and by god ..cows can run really fast. I kept wondering what that man must have done to cause such a reaction.

@vandana7 Dogs, just like any animal, are motivated by food. They might fight just to get their share, because at the end of the day, they're all hungry.

Your the only one that can decide if it's right.

I fed the dogs this morning. I convinced me that it is their nature - as god designed...and possibly they feared losing their food...though I am left to wonder how....the goats and rams don't eat dog biscuits...I want to know why they chased these goats and rams...when there was no provocation. You have both types of animals ...do they fight...and if so why?

@vandana7 It depends on how well they know each other if they get along. As these are all not trained animals they react naturally. And dogs can be a threat to goats and sheep. So the rams may have learned to attack first. Oh, and many goats will eat about anything.

I would also feed a hungry dog. We get them here coming out of the woods where hunters have abandoned them. One could barely walk and ribs were poking out badly. I think of it as you providing for the dog(s) that would not otherwise have any food at all.

@vandana7 The rescue place that I keep up with is 100% full of stray dogs right now. She is having to refuse taking in any more dogs. Problem with stray dogs is everywhere. Lots of people get dogs or puppies and then just decide they don't want them anymore. So wrong! It's very sad!

@kareng Tell me about it.... I would rather they spent time at some dog shelters before deciding ...laws should mandate three years daily two hours per person in the family at dog shelters...before adopting a dog...seriously...its so unfair...and as far as breeders are concerned...double their taxes if they cannot keep tabs on who is and who is not taking care of their pets, and double tax those who dump the dogs on roads...not fair...not fair at all...problem is all my wisdom is wasted. LOL

I am left to wonder if by feeding them, I am enabling them to be the hunters that they originally are...if they are weak and tired, they would not react so ferociously. This was rams, what if it was a baby or an old person....there have been cases of dogs eating babies... Of course, I will continue to feed these dogs, in fact, I did this morning. I wish I could feed the goats and rams too.

They are hungry. I would feed them, if you don't who will?

That is so true...but I feel, I feed them, because I like seeing them happy, I like seeing them wagging their tail when they see me, and greet me...selfish motive...if I served them, and they ignored me, would I still feed them? I am not sure. So they pay for what they are receiving.

At least you are showing them some love, I am surprised no one wants to take at least one dog,

There are too many. Problem is exactly this...I mean, you never know when a stray dog is gonna get into attacking mode. Our flats strictly ban ferocious pets, including dogs and cats...so that nobody is bitten or hurt. The flats opposite - they had one pet, but the owners got together and asked the owner to part with it...its that bad around us.

I'm not in favour of street dogs but our culture and country is so, so different to yours. I have no business telling you what's right and wrong.

Most of them are neutered. So there is going to be no next generation. In about 10 to 15 years from now, these dogs will disappear...but till then, why not feed them, and prevent them attacking any baby or elderly person? That is one aspect. Another aspect is ...till these animals are around, there will be fewer thefts, fewer rapes, fewer arsons, etc., simply because they do not allow strangers to enter their territory. In a country short of police force, this is a huge benefit. I am more selfish. They look at us with such appealing eyes...and approach us like babies...they more than earn their food from me with the love or whatever it is that they are showering on me. My happiness hormones go up, and that is a blessing, isn't it? I do understand your reasoning too. But I am fine with street dogs...each one of them is lovable.

@JudyEv Oh they do...that is the reason our building folks will not hear of a stray being brought in. They feel guests will be bitten..or even the mail delivery boys will be at risk.

@vandana7 That's great that at least some are neutered. Who pays for that? Neutering, especially of the females, is expensive here. I'm surprised they defend their territory against humans but I believe you when you say that is a good thing.

Dogs get so excited. My mom's dog would lick her face for a good five minutes. My ex-husband used to feed the dogs all the scraps from dinner. I didn't think much of it. I don't know much about dogs and their food. I'm more of a cat person although I've had several dogs in my life.
