The Danger of Red Dye

The things no longer available with synthetic food coloring Red 3 are bright-red Valentine’s Day candy hearts, ice pops in strawberry flavor and yogurt, some maraschino cherries, nutrition shakes, cough syrup, and gummy vitamins. These the Food and Drug Administration banned. Red dye 3 can no longer be used. In 1990 this petroleum-based dye was banned in cosmetics when cancer was caused in rats who ate it. I shudder to think how all those wax candies were made when they were popular because I sure ate a lot of them. I hope the red lips had none of this dye but here I still am all in one piece.

This stuff has been banned in so many countries for so long, and it is about time the United States got rid of it too.

@RasmaSandra Look at the chemicals in makeup in US vs. Europe in photo below. Mind blowing!

The only thing I really like that has red dye are chocolate covered cherries. The cherries with in , will have to be made a different way.

This should have been banned many years ago! I am sure the dye was put in Red Hots and I ate plenty of those growing up.

I still eat those. Right now they are using red 40. Which probably isn't safe either

@kareng Actually I think any dyes that might possibly be dangerous should not be used period.

I wonder how many other dyes/additives we've been eating for years that we shouldn't have been.

@JudyEv I once read so much on what to eat and not to eat that I just figured let it be in God's hands because otherwise we might be afraid to eat anything at all

@RasmaSandra That's pretty true. The other thing is that one day they're telling you eggs are good then they're saying eggs are a no-no. You can't really believe much at all.

They have two years to make the swap though to a different ingredient to replace the red3. I hope they replace all the dyes eventually with natural ones. Artificial dyes are so bad for us.

I'm glad they finally banned red dye 3. My older son couldn't have anything with it in it while he was growing up.

I used to chew on those wax lips as a kid, too! I think the only red color left that is considered safe is red #40.
