TikTok is down in the US

I must confess that I haven't paid any attention to the whole proposed TikTok ban because it simply isn't an app that I use. Congress passed legislation banning it in the US due to concerns about Chinese spying and influence. The Supreme Court ruled that the TikTok ban was legal so it was supposed to go dark at midnight on January 19. Well it is 10:56pm January 18 and the site already isn't working for people. Oh well. It doesn't affect me.

I’ve never used TikTok. I don’t really care if it is banned, but oh boy are TikTok “influencers” having a proverbial cow. They can’t believe their income source is gone.

It's my first time encountering the expression "proverbial cow".

I am glad that it is gone and I hope Trump does not bring it back.

I've never been part of it. Such sites are hard to control I'm sure.

I don't generally take the stance, "It doesn't affect me, so I don't care or don't want to know more about it." That's not me scolding you. That's no more than a general statement. I mean, what if said, "I don't have kids so I don't care about schools getting shot up. Doesn't affect me. I have no kids to lose." As for the TikTok ban I actually think the concerns are overblown and do think there are implications against freedom of speech which are important to consider. Do I have deeply rooted concerns about China? Absolutely. Do I have concerns about government interfering in business matters? That depends. I supported the decision not to allow Nippon to buy U.S. Steel, for example. I support some decisions made with respect to anti-trust. Do I have questions about what specific data the government feels may be interesting enough to China that it actually DOES pose threats to national security? 100% I want that defined. I support finding a solution to allow TikTok to continue to operate even if I am not a big user of the app. The bottom line is that if the government can ban one thing, it can ban anything, and if the American people, personally affected or not, do not ask questions—things will be banned that we don't want to be banned that we DO care about. Plenty of people made entire businesses and livings through TikTok. Regardless of how we feel about the nature of that, to simply sit back and be okay with people being stripped of their livelihoods is not a good position to take.

He's going to somehow try to undo a federal law so TikTokkers can chill out.

It is a big down for influencers. And ven for celebrities. They were earning some good amounts from Tik Tok and now that revenue stops. Now they would have to depend upon instagram or youtube. It was banned in India for same reasons. There was not much fuss about it. No court cases or any media supporting it. But for Tik Tok , Us was the biggest market . If thats gone , it would lose big reveue and perhaps they may want to work solution and agree to certain terms put by US congress. For me, personally it never impacted . I was neither an influencer there nor was using it.

It doesn't affect me. But it is a big blow to influencers who earn a living from TikTok. My husband does not allow us to use TikTok for the same reasons. He thinks TikTok takes personal information.
