Cold Days and Comfort Food

United States
January 21, 2025 9:27am CST
Happy Tuesday Everyone! saying it's cold here today would be an understatement. When I got up this morning it was 3 degrees F and now it's a balmy 7 degrees F. No sun either which makes it seem even more frigid. Plus the snow we got on Sunday won't be going anywhere for quite awhile. Thankfully I don't have to go anywhere today. It's the perfect day for comfort food so I think I'm going to make stew. We haven't had it in awhile and it just sounds perfect for a day like today. Funny how I seem to make meals depending on the weather. Stew is one of those that just seems to be a winner on cold days. I would never think of making stew during the summer. Do you have seasonal meals too?

Stews, casseroles and legumes are wonderful for cold weather. And now I´m eating salads as it is summer. I also make omelettes and I eat then warm (not hot).

I eat more salad in the summer too and more stews, soups, etc for the winter.

You're warmer than we are I think. We have sunshine and clear skies which is why it is so cold, no clouds to hold the 'warmth' in. Stew sounds delicious on such a day. I never think of it on a warm day either.

@Marilynda1225 That is cold, today is change over day and it should improve, slightly Today I am making homemade burgers for supper to have with gravy and mashed potatoes. It should be a warming meal, I am getting tired of chili.

Our overnight was below zero and now it's a balmy 9 degrees F or -12.778 C (seeing that in celcius seems even colder than Fahrenheit) Soups, stews, chili are my winter dishes whereas in the summer I love to barbecue and eat more salads.

I cannot imagine single digit temps here - oh brrrrr for sure! I love a hearty stew on a brrrr day - it's one of those meals that feels like it keeps our tummies warm and filled. We eat most things throughout the year - but if anything, I try to make use of the crockpot or oven when it's cold - and avoid heat appliances when it's hot.

@Marilynda1225 Ohhh, thank you for reminding me about chili! Bbq'd meals are soooo good . . . I just wish that cleaning the bbq wasn't such a huge task. My goodness it got really, really cold out there ! We were not in the fire areas - but at one point the Palisades fire almost made it to the very south edge of our huge Valley (in which we are in the middle). The winds have blown away much of the smoke, but the air quality it just horrible. Another fire started north of us (Hughes fire) - again the winds are blowing smoke and ash in another direction - hopefully they put out that one soon!

I agree about the different appliances when it comes to seasons. I use my crockpot often throughout the cold months and tend to make more stews, soups, chili, etc. and when the warm weather is here I love to throw stuff on the bbq It was below zero overnight and right now it's a balmy 9 degrees Hope you're doing ok with all those fires. I imagine the air and smoke must be terrible.

Generally I think it's pretty common to have our "go to" foods for different seasons.

It's a good time for chili too. I haven't had stew in a long time. We have a balmy -9 with a windchill at -23. I'm not going anywhere either. Enjoy your stew. I might make tuna mac and cheese. It's my comfort food lately and perfect for a chilly day.

I didn't think of chili but it certainly would be good on this cold day. I'll have to keep it in mind and make it in the next few days. I'm hoping to have enough stew leftover for another meal. Yikes your weather is making my bones ache Tuna mac & cheese does sound really good.

I think of hot cocoa, dark chocolate, or sugar free banana oatmeal cookies. However it is not chilly here, it is 79 F and cloudy

I seem to go all out on salads during the summer. And I was really looking forward to getting some chili made this week too. It was 6 degrees when I got up this morning, but it warmed up to 22 degrees. I can’t believe how bitterly cold even that feels.

It's frigid here and was below zero overnight. Thankfully the sun is shining now so it feels warmer than our 9 degrees. I'm just hoping our pipes don't freeze. Chili is a favorite of mine too and I might make some for the weekend. Right now I'm enjoying my coffee and Mush is asleep on my lap. Trying to myLot with the laptop perched precariously

Yes, I do make seasonla meals. I do like stew but I never really got into making it. Maybe next time I go to the store I will get the ingredients for it, or the time after that. @gardengerty was discussing a Reuben casserole one day. That sounds very delicious and is no carb too. I think that will be my next project.

@Marilynda1225 It does pretty much, although the bottom layer of a recipe I read called for roasted cauliflower, other than that, it is the same as a standard Reuben.

I'm intrigued by a Reuben casserole. I love Reuben sandwiches so I would assume it's got the same ingredients.

Sometimes but here the weather rarely gets that cold although if it got down to 10f I'd freak. Deserts usually have the winter cold in the wee hours of the morning when I'm tucked under warm covers thankfully.

It was 2F at 5:30 am here when I took my morning meds and is 7F now... We're supposed to see a high today of 22F, so still way too cold for me to be willing to go outside. (Pretty woke me up wanting to go grocery shopping. I can't see well enough to drive even if I was willing to be out in the bitter cold.) Stew sounds delicious! I hope you have a lovely day.

@Marilynda1225 Thankfully, all our snow is gone now. It's still well below freezing at night but we're getting above freezing by the afternoons now. Since we're above freezing this afternoon (40F), Pretty and I will be going to pick up our meds and groceries this afternoon.

Our overnight went down below zero and now it's only 9 degrees. Too cold for me to venture out. I'm just hoping we don't get any frozen pipes. I'm happy to stay put and enjoy my lovely heated house. I'm sure all the snow on the ground will be here for awhile.

I love Wendy's canned chili and always have some handy. Perfect for a quick and easy meal. I probably wouldn't cook much if I only had to feed myself. Even when my daughter isn't home I tend to just find something quick and easy to have.
