Squats to get fit

I saw a short clip on Facebook saying to drop a squat everytime you hear “mom” during the day and you’ll get fit.
When my son was little he would say mom and I had to say “what?”. If I didn’t answer him that exact way and just said mmhmm? or yes? or nooded or he would get angry and keep saying mom loudly and more angrily until I answered with “what?” This went on for years.
He talked constantly so you can imagine how often I heard mom in a day. At the end of the day I felt like I’d rather be called any other word lol. So gosh I’d have been fit as a fiddle back then had I seen that video clip.
It got me thinking with how snug my clothes are that I need to do some exercising. Instead of quick checking my email for example I could do squats while my food is in the microwave.
So yesterday morning I gave it a try. I brewed my coffee dumped the milk and sugar in then put it in the microwave for 45 seconds. I did 18 squats. I did about 10 more before my shower at bedtime.
Today when I tried doing them I can feel my muscles are a tiny bit sore. That’s a good feeling knowing I’ve worked muscles I haven’t in awhile.
Photo is unrelated. It is a fairy door my 3 year old and I created.

I saw a YT video showing how to do some exercises while sitting in a regular chair that didn't have arms on it. Unfortunately, the only chairs we own have arms on them. (They're captain's chairs for the dining room table we used to own.) Otherwise, we have a couch and a matching armchair and nothing else. Those won't work.
I've thought about trying the exercises while sitting on the workout bench but am not sure I can keep my balance on it. (I usually use the workout bench as a chair in our living room because it's taller than the couch and armchair so its not difficult for me to get off of when I want to stand up again.) I've had to pull people up off our couch and armchair and don't want to get myself stuck like that.

We don’t have any chair with arms. I loved my old kitchen chairs they were sturdy and 50 years old. My husband didn’t like them as they didn’t have very high backs so he couldn’t lean back comfortably. So he bought different ones. My kitchen is small so I bash my elbows off the top of them all the time when I walk by. One broke and had to be glued and bolted together. Junk compared to the good old solid ones I had.
If you ever got stuck down in your couch you may be able to lay down on your side and roll off. After my c-section my muscles were weak and painful so I had to roll onto my side and push up with my arms to get off or bed.

pink is my favorite color but I know my husband would not want that. With animals and kids darker things are better anyway.
I use my chairs to climb often as well.
Oh gosh you are lucky you didn’t get hurt helping get him up off the couch!

@shaggin I have rolled off the couch before but couldn't get up off the floor without help. Luckily, the workout bench was close enough I could climb up it to get to my feet.
My first wife hated all my furniture and gave it away when we moved in together. I didn't like the furniture she bought... (It was all pink!) I had to buy all new furniture after we started getting divorced.
Pretty and I left our kitchen table at the last house we had. I had to make a choice, have a kitchen table in this little house or keep my houseplants. I chose the houseplants and brought one of the kitchen chairs with us. I put the chair at the back of the kitchen so I could sit and read while waiting for things like pasta to come to a boil. (Pretty uses the kitchen chair to climb up to the top cabinets in the kitchen.)
When the OACAC representative came to inspect the house, he started to sit on the couch (He's even bigger/heavier than I am.) I told him the couch was really hard to get out of once he sat on it and asked if he'd like to sit on the workout bench while talking with us. He said he'd be okay. Then, when he tried to get up off the couch, he told me he saw what I meant about not being able to get up again. I pulled him up off the couch.

@snowy22315 I think holding a low squat is supposed to be really good for our bodies. Maybe that would be better for you than squatting up and down which seems to trigger pain in your knees. Not all exercises work for everyone
. I can’t do sit ups I have a raging headache immediately afterwards. I used to do a ton as a teen but as of about 10 years ago the headaches started.

I love the idea of using everyday moments to get a little workout in! ?? It sounds like you really made the most of that 'mom' challenge. I totally get the feeling of hearing your name repeated so many times—it’s like a mini workout in itself! But I love that you turned it into something positive by incorporating squats while waiting for things like your microwave.
It’s awesome that you’re already feeling those muscles work. It’s always a good sign when you feel a little sore because you know you're strengthening those muscles you haven’t used in a while. Keep it up, and you’ll be feeling even better in no time! And that fairy door you made with your 3-year-old is so cute—what a fun, creative project!

@mayka123 I always enjoy your thoughtful comments. “hearing your name repeated so many times—it’s like a mini workout in itself!” You are so right on that
. Do you have children?
Yes slight soreness can be a good sign
. Makes me feel a little more fit already.

I have always heard that it is amazing how much a person can get done while waiting on the microwave or other time. Not sure my knees can handle squats any more.

@GardenGerty I usually catch up online at myLot etc but my body is important as well and not having to buy new clothes will be good so exercise instead of online will have to be the choice I make more often.

Just how much milk did you put in your coffee that you had to nuke it for 45 seconds?
I often do sideways leg lifts when I'm waiting for the kettle or toaster.

@Barbaraprz a lot
I’ve never measured but probably 3/4 of a cup.
I love leg lifts. I do them more often over the years than squats.

@Rebeccasfarm thank you! My little one had a notebook she was drawing on then ripping the pepper apart and said she wanted to make a fairy door and that she needed glue and glitter. I gave her the glue and she added the first piece of ripper paper and wanted my help so I glued the rest on into a house shape and drew a door. Then have her stickers and she decorated the rest. It reminded my son and I of a gingerbread house

@wolfgirl569 yes they are beneficial for many things. My pelvic floor is weak after having my youngest. My first one tore through my bladder which started the issues but for whatever reason this last child was what made things the worst. Maybe just age or maybe because I gained more weight or maybe it had something to do with the c-section with this last child which I didn’t have with my first two. Anyway squats are supposed to be helpful for the pelvic floor so I’m hoping they help with that as well as so things stop jiggling so much

I do many squats a day, I don't think it's respectful to bent over in public.

@andriaperry hmm I hadn’t really thought of that. I probably bend over to grab things in public a lot less often than bending down to grab things off shelves though. It’s hard to picture as I usually rushing around and don’t pay much attention to how I’m standing.
