Winter struggles of a battery

January 27, 2025 1:29am CST
When it starts getting colder here in the UK around Christmas the elements put car batteries to the test. If you have a car battery that is already struggling, at some point it may fail, and you will regret not replacing it at the first sign of it struggling. This winter my car battery failed and I was lucky enough to have a battery jump starter which I store in my car boot. The previous year I had the same problem, but the battery didn’t need to be replaced as it was a one-off. I then started carrying the battery starter around with me just in case. It ensured I could start the car and drive home, and I then replaced the battery after the week of work I had. Do you carry something similar in your car? My starter is a little on the large size, but I have got a smaller one that can be hidden away in the boot now.

I keep saying I am going to get a battery jump starter but have not done that yet.

You will get one. But only after the battery fails and leaves you stranded!

@Danielclark691 We just replaced our battery last summer after nine years. I test it all the time.

I have jumper cables. My battery isn't in the best of health either but fortunately the winter cold didn't seem to affect it

No I don't have a car, but I usually see my dad and uncles carries one when travel for a vacation with the whole family.

I used to experience this when we still have a car. It is not because we have winter season, but the coldness of weather in the mountain makes it like it.

We have something similar but our winters are rarely cold enough to need it for this purpose.

I carry my phone in my pocket. I have roadside service in my insurance package so I can call a mechanic for a jumpstart and get it done for free. We bought a new battery in November and then the polar vortex killed our brand new battery. I've had to call twice for jumpstarts since the well below freezing temps started. We're finally back above freezing during the daytime but need to have the new battery checked. I think the frigid temperatures ruined it. (It's under warranty for a year after we purchased it.)
