Florida says you can buy a handgun at 18 but can't legally get drunk and shoot someone until you are 21

January 31, 2025 2:14am CST
Because 18 is old enough to own a deadly weapon but you must be 21 to have a beer. Of course, this is the same argument people have used for years - 18 means you are old enough to be drafted into service against your will and killed in a war as a soldier, but you STILL can't have that beer. Life is rather odd at times. Go Big Red!

I’m rather surprised that it was a Democrat, Glenn Anderson (D-California, the other crazy state) who introduced legislation that mandated that any state that did not raise its drinking age to 21 would be penalized 10% of their highway funds. (I say “surprised” because that sounds like something current…just goes to show you that what’s happening now has always been happening.) You can’t penalize a state 10% of their bullet allocations.

I am in agreement with that drinking age being raised. I think law presumes that the person would have gotten a job and hang of economics mostly by 21 so would not drive rashly lest the car crashes, and he be left with car loans, but no car. At 18, it is mostly dare by other passengers in the car...and trying to experiment new things. Parents are still in the picture for taking financial burden, or perhaps, implications are not understood at that age.

Question.... "drafted into service against your will and killed in a war as a soldier"....exactly what does it mean... America is a confused nation...like a kitten wrapped up in wool ball...unable to extricate itself. I find Japanese interesting...because I know so little about them.

It means required to join the army whether you want to or not and killed by the enemy.

Oh American army drafts men without their will? I didn't know that. I though it was a South Korea thing only.

Do they check the background of the person when drafted in Armed forces? I mean, when they give access to such weapons of mass destruction, it can be pretty dangerous, right? If they do it then, why can they not check the mental stability of the person before giving them access to the weapons...makes me wonder if armed forces hide bad behavior of somebody gone berserk.

So many laws don’t make any sense. I married young. I could sign for myself but my husband could not, as men had to be 21 and he was 18. We could legally drink at 18 at that time, he had a draft card at 18, but couldn’t get married unless one of his parents signed for him.
