A Busy Week Ahead and Hospitalization

Well, it looks like it's going to turn into a rather busy week. I have to make some banking trips to get the cash needed for our gambling trip next weekend in Kentucky, plus I do need to grab a few items on my list at Ruler Foods.
To top it off, mom went into the hospital yesterday after suffering a mild seizure, which is still yet to be explained. But it turns out she also has pneumonia, so they decided to keep her.
I know I have mentioned it a time or two, that my mom suffers dementia and lives with my sister and brother-in-law. It's a nice setup in their basement which has a living room, family room, full kitchen, two bathrooms, two bedrooms and its own laundry room.
She suffered the seizure while my sister was helping her with a shower, which turned out to be good timing since she was there and was immediately able to call for help.
Just the day before that my sister had taken mom to urgent care for her cold, and they found a higher than usual white blood cell count. The b*stards never did a respiratory exam?
Had she not had the seizure, we'd have never known she had pneumonia, and who knows? That might have killed her. Medical care these days can be quite questionable.
In any event, we visited with mom yesterday for a bit and we'll be back there today, and I would assume I will be there on Monday as well if she's still there, which I suspect she will be.

When I had pneumonia, I had to tell the child doctors what I had. They only rely in expensive exams but have no idea that if your back hurts it COULD have something to do with your bronchii or lungs. The hospital DOES know how to charge though. I´ll have to pay more than a whole month´s retirement pension for 2 days at the hospital.

Could be she had a fever from her pneumonia and it caused a seizure. Of course that would be too easy an explanation and they do have to rule out other things. My husband had a seizure once. When our primary finally sent him to a neurologist at our request the neurologist said that any one can have a seizure at any time. Bob has never had another seizure since then. The neurologist said it was a combination of a stressful work situation and an early morning wake up that allowed the seizure to break through. I hope they figure this out for your mom and for your sister's sake.

Sorry to hear about your mom. My mom didn't do to well when she had to be in the hospital after she had dementia. It didn't help that by then she was legally blind. So not only could she not see what the nurses were doing she didn't understand. We had to take turns sleeping in her room so she didn't freak out as much.

I lose faith in the medical community just about every time after a visit to the doctor. We have both decided to change primary doctors. I just hope we can find a good one that is taking new patients.
I hope your mother has a speedy recovery. They should have caught that at urgent care!

@kareng It was funny. My sister and I were in the room when two physical therapists came in to prepare mom for a walk. The doctor popped in at that moment and basically said, "Don't want to get in the way, but glad to see you are looking up and ready for a walk." He then left. My sister and I both, almost in unison turned to each other and said, "That was $900." lol

I’m sorry your mom isn’t doing well, and especially that she’s got pneumonia. That’s not good for anyone at any age. ![](/Content/images/emotes/sad.gif)

I'm glad your sister was with your mom when she had her seizure. I'm sorry she has pneumonia. I agree with you; they should have done the respiratory exam in urgent care. I hope she gets better soon and can return home sooner than expected.

Unfortunately, people with dementia can be prone to seizures.. The biggest problem being that sometimes they cannot really prescribe anything for seizure prevention, if the person has any heart issues, as it can interfere with certain medications. I hope you get a good report on your mom, and that her pneumonia is a short illness. Having pneumonia always just wipes me out and makes me so, so exhausted.
