As we head into the holiday season, I just thought I would put out a thought for anyone looking to add another family pet as a Christmas gift.
Before you decide to get a pet, make sure you are really ready for a pet. Make sure that you have the time to give and are prepared to be committed to this new member of your family. Animals are not perfect and require love and training to become that idea family member. Most of the time when they make a mistake, they aren't being bad, they are either bored or tried to give you a signal that they needed to be attended to and you missed the sign. Don't take on a animal if you are going to keep them outside and ignore them. If you can't afford vet bills and proper food, don't take on a pet.
Treated properly, you will have a loyal friend for life.
I say this as I am working with a rescue group that is in the process of acquiring several litters of puppies that are at a kill shelter. In all, we will be fostering and getting out for adoption 40 puppies from this one shelter alone. This doesn't include the many cats and dogs that we already have that are ready for adoption.
Before you buy an animal from a breeder, store or puppy mill, consider adoption of a pet that needs a good home. Feel free to visit www.rescueahart.org.... or try petfinder.com. Petfinder will help you locate animals that are ready for adoption in your area. As you can see, you can pick the breed you are looking for and the animals come in all ages and sizes.
Give an animal a Merry Christmas. And all of you, have a Merry Christmas as well

Good advice, there are loads of animals that just want a loving friendly home. All my cats were rescued and I love them dearly
