Cool Calendar! Just bought this for my aunt.

I bought 2 of them, one for her, one for me.
She is 98 years old and beginning to show early signs of dementia, I am sad to say. It’s a specific kind but I won’t go into detail, I just did a lot of reading on it and it said the best way to slow the progression is to keep her mind very, very busy, occupied, and engaged in activities.
Her doctor agrees.
I go there once a week and bring her food, usually I do a handmade calendar for her every month and I decorate it accordingly.
But THIS one is so cool
because it has a different “holiday” or special event for every single day of every month. I got one for myself too for the days I’m at home and I call her. So when I ask her what’s special about the day, I can look at mine while she’s looking at hers to help her along if she can’t remember the date.
I think it’s a good brain exercise.
We might even match the events for some of the days. Like I’ll be taking this to her on Monday and hanging it up, which is “Cream Cheese Brownie Day” on the calendar.
So of course I will have to buy her some kind of cream cheese brownie on the way there.
Would love to bake them but I can’t in this house. Non-working kitchen IMO
Longgggg drive to her place, which is one of the main reasons I’m in such a hurry to move outta here. When I lived back home, the drive was easy-peasy. Not anymore.
And she lives alone, that lucky lady.
But she does need a little more help now, so I’ll be going there more often, esp after I move out.
If you tell me your birthday, I will tell you what “holiday” the calendar says for that day and what makes it special. And show you the pic!

Heyy! I just hopped on here to see if I had any bites. This calendar thing is just too much fun. I already bothered my entire family with it.
And @kareng it’s my aunt, not my grandma but it’s pretty special that you said that because she happens to be my grandma’s sister and she is the closest thing I have to my grandma. (She passed away in 2014.) Grandma sort of adopted me right after I was born, so losing her was like losing a mom.
Ok, March 25th, let’s see what we got!
I’ll be back.

Thanks Amber, what I did was pick up some brownies on the way there, but also packed a saucepan in my beach bag that I always take to her place, and then I stopped and bought some cream cheese, butter, and brown sugar. I used her stove and tossed all the ingredients into a pot and just kept stirring away until it got all warm and gooey. Then poured it over the brownies and there ya have it. Cream Cheese Brownies. They look kinda messy but very delicious

What a fun gift! Kind of like the National Day Calendar which celebrates a special made-up day. My dad suffered from dementia in his late 80's-90's. Not severe just forgetfulness but yes keeping them occupied with activities is very helpful.
Now cream cheese brownie day is definitely one to celebrate and a calendar keeper.

@Melanie_Marie Mine is September 4th the same as my mom's. Pretty cool!
With Dementia you are at the mercy of time. It did not really improve but did not progressively get worse for him.
I've heard sunlight and hobbies which keep the mind alert are helpful. We enjoyed playing golf together and going to the horse track. That requires an active mind and problem-solving skills.
My Dad's dementia was more age related. My Grandfather's was much worse, as I believe it was a form of Alzheimer's before they had medically defined it.
I think you're doing the right thing by keeping her mind occupied.

Thanks DB, would you say keeping your dad occupied and engaged in activities really did keep his symptoms at bay?
This particular dementia my aunt has doesn’t end well, (terrible ending, actually) and I’m doing everything I can to preserve as much of her mind as possible. She happens to be one of the most spiritual and intuitive people I know. I’ve watched this lady predict things. She’s very gifted.
Also… care to share a birthday?
Or just the month… ?
I can show you the whole month and you’ll see your special day.
