It doesn't bother me that much, as I am working and also collecting some money from one of my retirement funds. But I hope it doesn't hurt those less "entitled" than I am. I was "blessed" by the cost-effectiveness of California's education system in the 1980s. I was able to pay for my graduate education (at UCSB) with Teaching Assistantships and Research Assistantships. I had no "student debt" when I graduated. Are you able to handle the increases in costs under the current administration? I view them as an "inconvenience," rather than something life-changing. I'd like to say that I am brilliant and planned the whole thing. But the fact is that I was both motivated and lucky. Have you ever been "lucky" enough to land a good job at the right time?

I have a good job, but perhaps will give it up, we shall see. If I do, then we will just spend less. I am bothered, but there is not much I can do to change things.

I did get lucky when I was hired on with the State of Louisiana, as there was a hiring freeze! Needless to say, I retired from the State of Louisiana in 2017 after had the stroke. I had 35 years in with the State when I retired.

@TheHorse Yes, I took it slow and easy and just hung around the house easing back into life. It definitely sets your body back. For instance I was always a prolific typist. I won State Championship in high school for typing. I know the keyboard and don't have to look to know what I'm typing. After the stroke and I got home, I wanted on the computer. But...it was all foreign to me. I had to stop and think...where is that letter at? It was bad! And shocking to me, but I was determined to get my typing back and I did. That's just one example. Speaking. I had to stop and think about what I wanted to say before talking. I could have gone back to work, but I used up my build up sick time to apply to my retirement. We do have a decent retirement and I don't regret it. I do wish my husband had retired when he had his in 2015. We went back to work and didn't retire until 2021.

I had not remembered about the stroke. Did you regain most of your functioning? Does the Government have a decent retirement package?

@kareng I am glad you got those skills back. I am not an expert in strokes, but I think we don't lose memories, whether they be of events or skills. We lose retrieval cues for those memories. Our task is to find new retrieval cues.

We may not be "rich", but we talk about how grateful we are for what we have in life. We really cannot complain. Even though the price of everything is getting higher, things are still doable for us. I think the thing to do is remain flexible in these times . . . the more flexible you are, the easier it is to be able to adjust, if needed. I am still the bargain hunter and can still find fairly good deals.

I think I have enough saving to weather another Trump presidency. But I don't want to be "smug." I just hope my retirement accounts are not raided.

@TheHorse I do think we have to be ready for any possibility. The uneasiness that any of us feel stems from the unpredictability of what is to come . . . this presidency is trying to bulldoze everything. My hope is we will all be able to sustain, but it's best to remain cautious and keep Plan B in mind.

@TheHorse You are renting so at least you don't have expenses like I do- 5 thou this year for house taxes and house insurance. And house jewels like exterior paint and house must haves like a better roof.

Doesn't bother me. I don't have to start paying for gas until George starts driving, and I am limited on where I can buy groceries. Walm-mart doesn't seem to be affected. His pepsi seems to be on a perment sale.

Its a bad trend for sure and not one you want. To me it like you said its not earth shattering but more of what they can get away with. We doing this to punish people in a sense and we also greedy and tired of people calling out our greed so here take this 10 dollar egg when should be 10 cents. This is not a world anyone wants to live in. Its kills motivation and a positive attitude like no other. Rebellions and mischief takes place because no one trusts anything.

@TheHorse That's it, but I will say avoid me if you plan is to get a rise. That's what Pisses me off the most. Fine Trump won, but was it solely to stick it the left or actually fix things. To me it looks like they not interested in fixing things just put in the eye of so called liberals. The world is about to make the US pay because of that decision. so hope they enjoy their little eye thing. Your credibility with the world might be shot.

I've had some good jobs in my day. I recall how happy I was when I got my raise at AT&T and was making a whopping $5 an hour. I was thrilled. That was in the mid 70s. I retired in 2006 having reached $9.90 an hour. Yeah, it's a struggle to buy enough groceries to see three people through the month. I am still buying the eggs I enjoy but had to quit eating the salmon.

We're doing okay here. I worry that folks like us that are okay but could slide lower too easily will be asked more and more to help those affected by the current nastiness. We do help some but can't do much more.

Glad to hear it. Here is an interesting song by Greg Brown. I have made "wrong moves." Including in the financial world (I wanted out of the Stock Market just before Bush II tanked it, but I let my stock broker overrule me), but overall I am OK.

@TheHorse We thought it was the end of the earth for us (exaggeration) when Vince was picked 3 times for a position but the very top boss (a Governent Minister) refused to endorse it and eventually the Minister's crony (who had been best man at his wedding) was appointed. About seven years later, Vince was appointed bursar at a top boys' college which completely turned our life around for the better.

We saw inflation rise over 30% during the Biden years, and less than a month after Trump took office we're blaming Trump for inflation his policies could NOT even remotely impact yet? It took Biden 9 months to CAUSE the inflation, but Trump's supposed to fix it in a few weeks? Good grief. Come on people, let's have some common sense here. I GUARANTEE you ANY inflation happening RIGHT NOW is FAR less than the 10% we saw in Biden's first year.

It sounds like you had a mix of hard work and good timing on your side, which is a rare but valuable combination. The cost of education and living has changed so much since the ‘80s, and it’s definitely not as easy for many people today to avoid debt. It’s good that rising costs don’t impact you too much, but for a lot of people, even small increases can be a real struggle.
