I have taught him piano a few times when his regular teacher is not available. He is a really sweet kid of maybe eight- or nine-years old. He can play Heart and Soul with both hands, and has Carol of the Bells almost done. Today I showed him the introduction to Bach's Toccata and Fugue in d-minor The "Phantom of the Opera" song. Bach wrote it when he was only in his mid-20s. I will only get to teach this kid now and again, as his main teacher is one of my colleagues. But his mom told me that she likes the fact that I like to teach classical tunes. She is a clasical cello player. That's my big story from today. I hope you had a good Tuesday. I am getting ready for bed.

At my very first teaching job 24 years ago I taught mostly Hispanic and minority students in a 7th grade class. I was 23 or 24 at the time. I had a student that I'll never forget--"Sandro"--who would give me a big hug as he entered my classroom each day. It kind of freaked me out because I didn't want to get in trouble but I also didn't want to discourage the child. His mother stopped by one day for some reason and thanked me for being so good to her "Sandrito". I was shocked that she was about my age. This year I have a sophomore student (15-16) who is nice enough but also a little off. He doesn't have an idea of personal space especially with an adult/teacher. He tries to hug me several times each day. I just put my arm up to stop it and say "get away from me". It really isn't as mean as it sounds because I tell them that whenever they annoy me or ask me an insane question.

That’s a lovely thing! Sounds like you are making a good impression on both student and his mother. Teaching a young kid pieces like Carol of Bells and Bach’s Toccata and Fugue is pretty amazing. It’s exciting when kids get introduced to classical music early on. And for you, it must be rewarding to see your student’s progress , even if you only teach him at times. Given he is only 8-9 , his progress is definitely amazing to read . Perhaps he is gifted and we need to work on the gift. Enjoy your next lesson with him whenever that happens. Hope you have a great day ahead!

That is good that you get to teach him once in a while and the break with someone else is good for him.

I agree, the classics are important, I'm glad you got a hug, the world needs more hugs. Here's another one.
