Ice storms can quickly lead to bad outcomes.

It started this morning, a fine, icy mist that froze on contact. There was almost immediately a thin layer on everything. I am so thankful I hopefully do not have to drive on it today, we have a lot of drivers that don't seem to understand that if there is ice, you need to SLOW down. But most of them don't, and then they slide all over the place, have a wreck, or hit the ditch.
The main intersection to the interstate, not far from my house, has two semi trucks that slid into each other and blocked the main lane. One is lying on it's side, according to the news clip I watched. Schools are doing an online learning day.
About an hour ago, there was a loud boom somewhere close by, close enough to make me go to the front door and look up and down the street. The neighbor down on the corner turned in to his driveway, slid on the ice, and ran into the side of his garage. His sons were home and they were out there with him, he appears to be fine...but his car and his garage, not so much! Now I really, really don't want to go anywhere at all today! I am glad to see he wasn't hurt, but with ice everywhere I didn't try to cross the street and walk down there. No doubt I would be on the ground/sidewalk, it is really slippery out there!
I am a snow lover...but I somehow wish we would not ever get these sheets of ice. So dangerous. If you are in the path of this ice, be careful!!
istock picture, I could not get outside to get close enough to a tree to show the ice on it!

Ice is extremely dangerous. People can get seriously injured just walking down a sidewalk.

I don't think anyone can walk on our sidewalks today at all. They would need heavy boots with cleats or something.

@MarieCoyle I wonder if there are even heavy boots with cleats built in.

Yes, I have seen them, but they are hard to find and expensive. Plus, you have to change them if the cleats aren't needed. Kind of like having chains on tires--if the weather isn't icy or slippery, you have to take them off or they will destroy the roads.

We actually were able to stay home today, but many places were closed. The roads were very bad.

@MarieCoyle They did a good job keeping up with the roads here last night. We can see lights travelling at a decent speed past the neighbourhood on the big road. My hubs plans on driving over to our son's place to watch the girls today. He takes his time, and has alot of experience driving in poor conditions, its the inexperienced drivers who do not allow themselves extra time who are a concern driving on a day like today.

The road workers really worked to get our main highways and interstates cleaned up. The side roads are not the best, but if you go slower you'll get there. I am used to snow and ice, I have lived in Montana and Alaska, and of course here in Illinois we have our share as well, I learned many years ago you cannot go fast on ice. I always allow extra time, just lie your husband.
We have more ice on the way Friday night and Sunday. And a bit of snow, too.

We did manage to stay inside today. Son had one appointment and he did it via telehealth. But tomorrow he has another and the doctor wants him there, so time will tell. Hopefully by then, all the roads will be clear.

Well, you do often get whatever I get here, after I get it, but time will tell. Take care if it gets icy!

Black ice is an accident waiting to happen. I've had a few close calls in my life. Once driving to school I had to break and slid on the ice spinning my car completely around facing traffic. I was so lucky it was an early morning college class and traffic was light.
Glad I am retired now and no longer need to go out in bad weather conditions.

Black ice is really frightening. If it's really bad, I try to stay off the roads. We were asked on the news tonight to not drive or go anywhere unless it was absolutely necessary, the restaurants, grocery, etc,. closed early as well. It's just nasty out there.

You cheer me up, Marie!
When things seem bad over here in the UK, then I just need to look over the pond and things are worse. We are enduring a long cold spell, but strangely very little snow or ice. The max temperature for the last few weeks has been about 5C (41F) and no sign of it improving any time soon.
As for your situation - all I can say is “Stay safe!”. A fall on the ice can do serious damage. I know you can’t afford that. Hopefully Spring is here soon and it brings warmer temperatures. Take care!

I'm glad you are properly cheered up!
I can't fall, I just can't. If I got hurt I might not be able to care for my son, and that wouldn't be good.
We did have a little reprieve since the last storm, and a few days that were fairly nice in the 40's-50's before this hit, but now we seem to be in a long, cold spell. More sleet/ice/snow Friday evening, and next week as well. Bring your ice skates and come on over, Orson!
