It Was a Good, Simple Night

Valentine's Day is something my wife and I really don't actually celebrate. Both of us sort of feel like it's an overrated grab for money. We have other ways of celebrating our love throughout the year rather than wasting money on cards and gifts. At the same time, it didn't stop me from getting her some flowers, and she brought home a 6-pack of Firestone Union Jack IPAs. It's one I have not had before, and it was really good. IPAs are of course, my favorite style of beer besides my regular Miller Lite. I have always liked the extra hoppiness of Miller Lite, which is probably because I like IPAs which are very hoppy. For dinner I made breaded sirloin pork chops with buttered kernel corn and fried potatoes on the side. It suited us just fine.

I like how you two had a simple day. That's a wonderful way to celebrate without officially celebrating.

@lilacskies I mean, we're still married. It's not ALL love and romance, of course.

We do a lot of things together just because. Like I always like to say, if every day isn't special in it's own way, what's one day going to do to make the difference?

You don't need to buy cards, just make one of your own.

Every once in a while, I write a short poem for my wife. It goes miles compared to a card.

We did not celebrate "days" with my husband. But we felt that every day was a celebration.

That's the way to think about it. If every day is not special in its own right, then one day won't make a difference.

What are sweet nothings, exactly? Has anyone ever solved this mystery? lol

Sounds good. We've never celebrated Valentine's day, either. We show our love when it's not expected.

The little things and especially the little surprises sure do make a difference, that's for sure.

We don't believe in all the hype around one special day. It's all too commercial for us.

@porwest Exactly. Halloween is another one we don't do although I guess there's not much expense there. But it wasn't a thing when we were kids so it's hard to get hyped up about it. I guess it would be different perhaps if we had grandchildren.

@JudyEv We have hardly any kids up our way on the block, so we don't do it either. We did it one year, bought 300 pieces of candy and dressed up and put on a fire, and no one showed up. That was the end of that. lol

It really is. And I mean, $6 for a card that just gets tossed in the trash? What's the point?

Good to hear that you had a nice time. My ex and I never went out on Valentine's unless it was trivia night. I'd make him a nice dinner and he'd bring flowers home. Good enough.

I like the simple life, honestly, and of course, in life, to me, it's the little things that count for the most.

My husband and I would not even bother to wish each other. We don't need some special day to showcase love, it's way too commercialized these days. Love is to be celebrated and nurtured each day.
