We have a cashew tree and we get cashew nuts with their shells on. We sell lthem as toget the kernels there is a long drawn clumsy process. They have to be burnt and the shells broken to get to the kernels While the burning is going on the smoke is suffocative which is not good for breathing The cashew apples with the nut drop down which we have to pick up every day Cashew apples are tasty but with their astringency they can coke the throat. I avoid eating them I have made wine and juice with them.

Pretty cool. I never heard that anyone would do anything with the cashew apple.

If one can tolerate the astringency they are delightful to eat.

I love cashews—the ones ready to eat, not the ones you still have to process from the tree to get the nut! I just want the good part, no hard work! haahaha

It’s my understanding that “raw” nuts still in the shells are poisonous, so they have to be roasted/smoked. I don’t know who the first brave soul was who figured that out.

They are not poisonous We sometimes drop the green apples and slip open the shells which is ready to do. The kernels are soft and those can be used in making sweet dishes The hard ones are burnt or roasted as breaking them without that is not easy and yes the oil in the outer shell is poisonous but used in paints. Oil is extracted while they are roasted and this happens in factories.
