Old-fashioned perambulators

When we were first married, just about everything we had was second-hand or hand-me-downs. Even my maternity dresses were given to me by a friend. I think I made myself maybe one or two new ones. We were given a cane pram like the one in the photo and we used it for the two boys. No doubt, we then handed it on to someone else. My niece had a doll-size pram which was very similar. We marvel now at some of the prams that go past on our street. ‘Pram’ is a shortened form of perambulator, the old word for a pram or stroller. No wonder they shortened it.

Are they really? I would have thought the modern ones were much more efficient.

@JudyEv Yes, the upper class are frequently using them and posting them on social media. I don't use social media, but I do watch YouTube shorts about them. YouTube is a type of social media for YouTubers so I noticed them. They have been back in style for a while now.

That is very cool. I don't get to sit in that when I was young. The only thing that I ever sit in was probably a walker.

I haven't seen a baby carriage in years, I had one that came off the base to become a carrier to travel in the car

And some had a piece you could raise so the child was sitting up rather than lying down.

My mother had a lovely blue leather one similar in style to the box-like one on the left. It had large springs and nice rubber on the silver wheels. It was never taken outside. She used it for my brothers and I and then when a neighbour approached her to watch her son, and then the other when he came along, she used it on them. It sat in the kitchen and the child could nap in it or sit up and play before they were old enough to walk. She always referred to it as a buggy.

@JudyEv Yes, actually I do. She had a smaller version of that buggy. It was a cream coloured leather, a nice soft kid leather, not like the canvas ones you see these days, or even that I had. It was still quite stable and adjustable that she could close down the back so that the infant could lie flat. It also folded down to a reasonable size if she wanted to put it into the trunk of the car, the buggy was such a generous size and the wheels did not come off nor fold down that portion of it. The only portion that closed was the little canopy. My older brother and I are only 11 months apart, and she used to put the 2 of us in it in the kitchen so that she could keep an eye on us-more him than me.

I've heard the term 'buggy' used too. Do you remember what she used outside?

@Juliaacv That sounds like the stroller we had. The back of that would fold down and it would fold up nicely to go in a vehicle.

My first wife and I never had one of those for Pretty. We got an umbrella stroller and only used it for her. We saw a lot of fancy looking strollers and I wondered why the parents bothered with things like that. They looked awkward and I have no idea how they got them in and out of their cars when taking the baby somewhere. The umbrella stroller just folded up and fit in the trunk.

There are all sorts of designs available now. Some are designed specifically so the parent can run or jog easily with them.

@judyev I was pushed about in a tansad. My grandchildren have all been pushed around in unnecessarily costly devices that do everything except feed the baby.

Now they come with fans, well cushioned, and look luxurious. Nothing less will do is the refrain. Kids are spoilt from the word go.
