Have You Lived in More Than One State or Country?

Some of us have lived in only one state or country, the one where we grew up in raised by our parents. Others have lived in more than one place, or just like the Johnny Cash song, I've lived everywhere man. I have lived the majority of my life where I was raised, in New Jersey, but I did move to Florida for a brief time, only to return back home to NJ again. How about you? What were the reasons for your moves, and are you happy you left there, and wound up in the state or country you currently reside? The reason for my move was weather related and also the allure of starting over in another state. I hated the winters in New Jersey and wanted to go to a warmer climate. I also had been laid off from my job and sought a new opportunity. So, those were my reasons for moving. Obviously, my move did not pan out. I could not find a good enough paying job in my field, we were hit with a bad hurricane in my time there, and the summer weather was brutally tropical. In my case, the "grass was not greener on the other side." So, what was your experiences like when you moved? Photo- Amazon

Which 2 have you resided in? Did you enjoy your experience in the second place? Was there a reason you moved back to the first state?

I was born in Oklahoma, but my parents moved with my sister and me to California when we were children. After two years, and finding it a struggle to make a decent living, they moved us back to Oklahoma. I hate the spring and summers here, but I love the people. It would take my entire family leaving the state for me to leave Oklahoma.

I expect the cost of living was very high in California. Ah, the Sooner State! I think friendly people is a good reason to live there. Thanks for responding!

I've never lived outside the state of Florida, but I did move from my home town to where I am now. and, I don't regret it. This place is bigger and gives me more options to get around. I have more resorces here as well. As well as my husband.

@dgobucks226 I think it was smaller by far. But St. Augustine is a god size for what it is. I used love living there. I don't like the heat, but winters aren't so bad here.

@kaylachan Yes, and many snowbirds would agree with you! I believe the golf museum is in St. Augustine. As someone who plays and enjoys watching I would love to visit there. Thanks for responding

Glad the move turned out well for you! Was your hometown population a lot smaller than Daytona Beach? What do you enjoy the most/least in living in the state of Florida?

I been through Georgia and visited Savannah. I really enjoyed watching the large ships which sailed along the Savannah River. Such a beautiful quaint place. I also visited Atlanta and went to a place called the Underground. Lots of fun and festivities there. Stopped there when traveling to Florida on Spring break, lol. Georgia, the Peach state has so much diversity in its landscape. From the coastline to the Appalachian mts. Wherever you reside there it seems like it offers something for everyone. What do you find to be the best thing about living in Georgia? Climate, People?

I was born in MO, but lived in VA, NJ, California, Hawaii, and NC. My dad was in the Coast Guard. My husband and I have lived in eastern NC for 57 years now and love living in the country.

@dgobucks226 Yes, we moved every two years because of the Coast Guard. The worst part for me was every time we moved in Oct, I was always the new late girl. But NC is a beautiful state. We live about 90 miles from the coast, so we enjoy fresh seafood. I feel so very sorry for the folks in the western part of the state after that hurricane. Are you still happy to be in NJ? We were in the middle downtown of Jersey City when I was 12. It was a lot less dangerous then. But those two years were some of my happiest.

Very interesting. Was your dad's being in the coast guard the reason for all the moving around? My mom was from the state of NC, and I really enjoyed visiting my relatives there during summers. It's a beautiful state with friendly people. I have relatives located throughout the state, and visited the ones in Newton, Maiden and Hickory. My Uncle and Aunt had a cabin located on Lake Norman, a great place to fish and water ski. Many great memories going there. I'm sure there are many great attributes living in NC in addition to the ones I've mentioned. Your living there 57 years is a testament to that. Thanks for sharing!

@1creekgirl I can just imagine how difficult it was to leave the friends you made and have to start anew. Yes, I was so surprised the hurricane traveled so far west and inland. Along the coast sure, but into the Appalachian area of NC had to be rare. My cousin was from Jersey City when we were growing up. We both live about 15 minutes from each other. That city has received a melting pot of new immigrants not like the past, as I'm sure many towns have. Thanks for sharing!

Lived most of my life in India. In the last 15 years I have moved between India and Australia twice - 6 years in Australia in 2 stretches. Love both countries, but we will move back to India next year. Moves are always challenging, but Australia is awesome!

I was born and raised in the country in Louisiana, but lived most of my life in the Baton Rouge, LA area. After Hurricane Katrina, there were so many new residents in the Baton Rouge area that crime went up, traffic was crazy. It took both my husband and I an hour or more to get home from work every day! And that was also dealing with annoying drivers, wrecks, road construction and lots of traffic. We ended up buying a place in Mississippi and purpose was to unwind on the weekends. It was in a country setting with no close neighbors, a very small town with less than 1200 residents. It was so nice that we eventually ended up driving back to MS during the week. The drive after work was max an hour and 15-20 minutes. No traffic, very few red rights--just in a couple of small towns and a scenic drive with rolling hills. Win! We ended up moving into the house in MS and enjoying the quiet life, even before we retired. And we are still here!

We've only moved within our own state. From country to city and back again - then back again. We're in the city to be close to medical facilities, etc, now that we're older.

@dgobucks226 We travelled a reasonable amount I guess but lived about equal amounts in the city and country. I much prefer the country as it's much more peaceful and quiet. No noise, air or light pollution.

From reading your posts you have visited many different places both in Australia and other countries. Where have you lived the most years in the country or city? What did you enjoy most about country life vs city and city vs country life? If you had your preference, would you rather stay in the countryside?

@dgobucks226 No, some were very small towns. The cost of living varied from place to place. Some have very high house rent but low vegetable and fish rates while some had both things cheap. Quality of life was good at Bhubaneswar and Rourkela. I live in Rourkela now where I was born

I am both a navy brat and a navy veteran, so I have lived in many places, although never outside the country. I was born in New Jersey and have lived in Florida, Wisconsin, Michigan, California, Illinois, Mississippi, and Virginia. I think I did finally find "roots" with 20+ years in Wisconsin and close to 20 years in Illinois.

@dgobucks226 I thought I already did that when we lived in California. lol. Our eventual plan is to spend winters in Florida. My dad's final transfer was to Illinois for recruiting before my parents divorced, so I was there before I went into the navy. My sister joined the air force and stayed in Illinois and has lived here ever since. Eventually I decided to return to Illinois since my mom had moved back here from Wisconsin as well.

I was born in United Arab Emirates and lived there for 16 years. Later moved to India for my higher education. After my graudation , I got into IT. And after 2 years, I moved to US for a short assignment and lived there for almost 1.5 years and then returned to India. Within India , I lived in 2 states although I have visited other states for short duration. It is fun and a lot of learnings while you live in different countries and states. I still love travelling and well there are challenges to anything anywhere , but we should look at the better and bright picture. Only a lucky few live in areas where they were raised. Good to know your experience. Have a wonderful weekend!
